Bottom post of the previous page:

The Gatorade Players of the Year for Each State was announced today.

The Class of 2022 had two players that were named their State's POY.

North Carolina - Kierston Deal - Here is her announcement.

https://playeroftheyear.gatorade.com/po ... _KDeal.pdf

Key paragraph:
The 5-foot-7 senior left-handed pitcher led the Eagles (27-3) to the Class 4A state final this past season. Deal posted
a 23-3 record with a 0.79 ERA, striking out 305 batters in 150.1 innings pitched, while walking just 34. She also
batted .533 with 5 home runs and 28 RBI. The Central Piedmont Conference Player of the Year and three-time
Pitcher of the Year, Deal is also an Extra Inning Softball First Team All-American. She is ranked as the nation’s No. 1
prospect in the Class of 2022 by Extra Inning Softball.
A devoted member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Deal has served as a peer tutor in her school system and
has volunteered locally on behalf of the Salvation Army, a Vacation Bible School and youth sports programs.
“Kierston Deal is the kind of top-notch athlete that doesn’t come around often,” said Natalie Layden, head coach at
Ronald Reagan High School. “The statistics showing what she does on the mound and in the box speak for
themselves, but she is a real competitor who understands what it takes to be successful.”
Deal has maintained a weighted 4.38 GPA in the classroom. She has signed a National Letter of Intent to play
softball on scholarship at the University of Oklahoma this fall.

Arizona - Jocelyn Erickson - Here is her announcement.

https://playeroftheyear.gatorade.com/po ... ickson.pdf

Key paragraph:
The 5-foot-9 senior catcher posted a .624 batting average with 25 home runs and 58 runs batted in this past
season, leading the Eagles (22-11) to the Conference 6A state tournament. Erickson, who is ranked as the nation’s
No. 10 recruit in the Class of 2022 by Extra Inning Softball, also banged out 10 doubles, scored 50 runs and walked
28 times, compiling a .704 on-base percentage and a 1.581 slugging percentage. As a catcher, the Conference 6A
Player of the Year threw out 4-of-8 would-be base stealers and picked off five runners at first base.
The president of her seminary class at her church, Erickson has volunteered locally with Feed My Starving Children
and as a youth softball coach. She has also donated her time to multiple community service initiatives through her
church. “Jocelyn is the best player in the state,” said Rich Hamilton, head coach of Red Mountain High. “We
couldn’t get her out. Offensively, she controls the plate. Pitchers have to be so careful that they usually make a
mistake. Defensively, she made you change your offensive plan because of her skills as a catcher.”
Erickson has maintained a weighted 4.12 GPA in the classroom. She has signed a National Letter of Intent to play
softball on scholarship at the University of Oklahoma this fall.

REPORT CARD - We still have Deal but the other 3 transferred out.

I guess Deal is enough to earn this class a C-

Yep.
Deal looks like she's going to stick.
In fact, saw a post away yesterday that makes me think she may be this year's Chaplain.

And.........interestingly, Hannah Coor is the lone survivor from the '21 Class that had, what....6 or 7 or 8? Jordy Bahl's class. It was a big class anyway, and Hannah's the only one left from that one.

Our Sooner Times posts don't go back that far, and I've got too much to do this morning to go back and look on the rosters way back when. But it was a big class.

the 21 Class (Bahl's class) had good players but they got stuck behind all time greats (Lyons, Hansen, Boone, Coleman, Jennings, and I count Brito with them as well) and just never had chance to show off their ability. If our 24 and 25 class pan out, the same could happen to the 26 class.

Historians will write many books and tomes about the effects of the Covid Year(s) on all aspects of our lives. We will keep dealing with the effects, IMO, personally or in a larger, social context, for years. I hope some of those effects can be positive and healthy for our country and the people we care about.

That extra year of eligibility due to Covid had (and still has, IMO) ripple effects for OUSB. I'm not saying these effects are all and only negative. Some may be the best thing that ever happened to OU. I'm just intrigued about the facts and effects of a major event in our country and the sport itself. I don't blame anyone for not wanting to remember all that.

Maybe my historian's bone gets itchy from time to time - how the past has shaped the present.

At the end of 2023, I saw losing Nugent and Erickson to the portal as a big time loss for 2024 and future potential. Then, the team went out and won an historic Natty without them. Frosh Parker and Pickering said, "Who are Nugent and Erickson?" That Core Five of seniors came through in their extra year of growth and eligibility. (Insert, "We're not worthy" bowing to these greats of the sport.)

Were those losses to the portal really losses? In a way, they were....and they weren't. There is no way to know. It didn't matter last year (as we escaped Florida and Erickson by one run in Game 2 - whew!). Now, the chickens come home to roost as we have little returning experience and start over with a young team. That is not good or bad - it is just a fact that is based in history.

What the heck am I trying to say? I think my main point is not about wins and losses this year, or OU's long-term future. I just want to say I see the ripples of Covid moving through the program four years after the fact that has shaped what the present looks like today.

I should erase all the above except the last sentence. I wish my brain processed thing more efficiently at times. I appreciate the opportunity to work it out with Sooner Nation.

Boomer!

The Magnificent Seven certainly left their mark on the Sooner Softball Program.
And I'm looking forward to seeing how the Amazing Eight will impact the program as well.

I would not be surprised if what you said is pretty well known among opposing coaches and consequently used against us in recruiting. IOW, the high school prospects might know quite a bit regarding who we have already, and make predictions on their prospects for playing time. I'm not saying that situation dominates in recruiting. It's only a guess on my part, but that situation could be at least a partial factor. ::rice2::

Yeah, "Anti-OU" recruiting is a real thing out there.

If I am an opposing coach, I would use that argument for sure. In softball, there is no going pro in 3 years and you rarely red-shirt, so getting stuck behind someone that is one class ahead is just a death sentence to your playing time. With NIL now, sitting on the bench is not the best way to maximize your earning potential. Not being able to land the best and losing players to the portal are just consequences I need to accept and live with.

Of course..my amusement had to do with the OU-centric way it was presented.
