Q-B question that needs addressed or maybe not...

I read all the praise, etc, going to Jackson Arnold but I see nothing on how we let go probably the number (national) 2 or 3 quarterbacks in stable leave the program with basically, out a whimper. Goodbye Gabe, nice to have known you, but take your Senior Heisman run to Oregon.

I just wonder what the Sooner Nation would have thought if this would have happened if some of our past greats,( transfers like Gabe did)? Jason, Baker, Kyler? Yes, former Heisman winners that stuck it out and won the prize.

I guess where I'm going, is to go on record we should have not changed horses when we were on a roll. I know I'm probably the only one on this board that would have told Arnold he would have to wait is turn unless he was head and tails better than Dillon, and from what I seen in the bowl game he is not.

Anyway, something to ponder, argue, etc, as we count down to the start of maybe my last season (I'm fighting cancer). I personally think Dillon will win the Heisman at Oregon and if not I would love to be proven wrong when it goes to JA..

Gabriel and OU agreed that when he transferred here that he would move on after 2 years . The thinking was that he would be NFL bound after 2 years and of course the draft grade was not what Dillon was hoping for and he was encouraged to leave so the Arnold era could begin .

My take is that if you clogged the pipeline you get a mess……

Dillon had his time and it was good and allowed JA to mature and adjust and learn. It is time to get JA on the field.

DG was good at not forcing passes or plays and taking what was there. His limitation was accuracy on longer passes.

JA appears to have a much better ability to be accurate on long passes and is a better runner than Dillon. He just needs to avoid the turnover.

So I think we saw DG’s ceiling he played well for us. But if you dont keep the QB room progressing you end up in QB purgatory when the 6th year starter leaves and the others QBs got tired of waiting for an opportunity that was delayed for years. Keep in mind in this NIL era a good QB can easily transfer and start elsewhere and get paid big bucks….

It is a different time than what we were in with Baker and Kyler. Caleb was the first NIL QB transfer out of OU

IF the QB competition would have been OPEN for 2024, it is entirely possible that Arnold wins it. Given the risk for DG, the risk for OU's team, and the risk that JA transfers, the actual outcome of DG transferring served ALL very well.
texsa sucks!

Oklahombre first and foremost I wish you all the best. I happen to agree with you. I think we should have kept Dillon and told Arnold to wait his turn. If he leaves we have other quarterbacks or we can buy another quarterback after this season. I would rather go into the SEC with an experienced quarterback that is at least in the Heisman conversation.

Thanks LA. I posted it to create some reactions and we are getting some good ones. It's been a while since we've had one on this board. I guess we are in a wait and see mode. Love everyone that disagrees . That's why we have these board's

Personally, I wouldn't mind if Dillion won the Heisman this year. I will be forever grateful that he lead the Sooners in the defeat of the shorthorns last year!

I agree with AllSooner wishing Gabrial a heisman season. He transferred in 2 years ago when we really needed him, was a leader and a winner for two years.
As to him moving on, the ceiling on Arnold is supposed to be much higher, with a stronger, more accurate arm. We just need the poise and ball protection to go with it, and we have an improvement in QB play. I saw too many deep passes that were just missed, or short enough that the defense could catch up to our WR who was open behind the defense.. If Arnold can hit those long passes we will find out if the SEC is OU ready.

First of all, my prayers to you and your family, Oklahombre!! I hate to hear this!

As far as JA goes, I think I tend to agree with SoonerMike in that there doesn't appear to be a tremendous amount of ceiling space left for Gabriel. Don't misunderstand, he's a good QB, and probably better than JA at this point in time. But I do believe JA has a higher ceiling and perhaps it's time for his era to begin. I guess I'll do something stupid and trust the coaches to know what they're doing and everything will work out for the best going forward. Only time will tell though.
I may not always be right, but I'm never wrong!

First and Foremost my prayers are with you 'Hombre.I think the decision was made the way it was was because innagural season in SEC and after several meetings, conversations, etc it was decided that it was best at that point to move on with JA as the "Man" and let him get the experience early and set a foundation going forward. No disrepsect to DimeTime ta all!!!!!

DG is a good quarterback. Very good at times - see the game winning drive vs texass. If he were a great quarterback, he would have gotten a better draft grade and would be in an NFL training camp right now. There’s a reason he’s in his 6th year of college instead.

The standard at Oklahoma is great. Maybe Arnold is going to be great, maybe not. We won’t know til we get him on the field for a full season.

First - Hombre, my family & I will be praying for healing & strength for you during this fight. To quote the wise philosopher, Rocky Balboa, "life isn't about how hard you can hit. It's about how hard you can get hit & keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!"

Second - re: DG. He is a good college spread/RPO/HUNH QB. He makes good reads & decisions; has a strong enough arm for most of the throws that system requires of a QB; and he is mobile enough to escape pressure, run the RPO schemes, & hurt defenses with his legs. He is significantly undersized for the NFL at 5'11". Baker & others have shown you can have success as an undersized QB in the NFL, but you have to have other ELITE traits - particularly an insanely strong & accurate arm. DG does not have either of those qualities.

The plan was for him to transfer to OU, play for 2 years, & declare for the draft after last season. If I recall correctly, he put in for his draft evaluation & it came back significantly worse than expected - like UDFA bad. So since he still had 1 more year of eligibility due to covid rules, & since he is likely getting paid WAY more money via NIL than he would as an UDFA in the NFL, he withdrew from consideration for the draft. I don't know if he had conversations with BV & the coaches about returning to OU, but I would imagine he did. I also imagine that the coaches told him, "thanks for everything you've done & achieved here, but we're going to move on to the inexperienced 5-Star QB."

I've kind of been busy. Chemo and radiation kind of takes it out of you. You may have noticed I have been giving (likes) under my K2C handle. That's because it is the handle on my smartphone. I was never able to change it. I'm stuck in my lounger most of the time away from computer and thus the phone. I hate typing on the phone.

Trust me, I haven't boycotted this site. Just been fighting, fight, fight. LOL. :boohoo:
