Week 5 of the college football season can be summed up thusly: “Don’t change that channel!” There were surprises, game-deciding final plays and amazing comebacks all over the place! Guess we should’ve seen what was coming from the way Friday night went with the controversial ending to the Miami-Va. Tech game. The officials took an eternity to decide if VT’s Hail Mary to the end zone as time expired (and ruled a catch) was indeed a catch. No offense, but if you take that long to decide one way or the other if a pass was caught, how can you possibly say what you saw was conclusive enough to overturn the original decision? Not saying the overturned decision wasn’t ultimately the right call, but I’m having a very hard time accepting that the evidence was “conclusive”. But that was just an appetizer to a crazy weekend…
As time expired in Piscataway, NJ, the Washington Huskies missed a 55-yd FG attempt to send their game against Rutgers into OT. In Lubbock, TX, Cincinnati missed a 51-yd FG attempt as time expired to send their game against TT into OT. Minnesota trailed Michigan in the Big House 24-3 before rallying with 3 fourth qtr touchdowns to pull within 27-24, then recovered an onside kick with 1:37 left. But it was not meant to be as the Gophers were flagged for offsides on the play. Michigan recovered the second attempt and ran out the clock. BYU rolled up a 21-pt advantage over Baylor before having to hold on for dear life with an interception with 59 seconds left to win 34-28. Then there was Kentucky going into Oxford, MS and taking down the 6th ranked Ole Miss Rebels, 20-17. Mississippi missed a 48-yd FG attempt with 48 seconds left to send the game to OT. And if you turned off the TV after Bama took a 28-zip lead in the 2nd qtr against Georgia, you missed one of the wildest 4th qtrs. in recent memory. Not only did Georgia make a furious comeback, but the Bulldogs actually grabbed a 34-33 lead with 2:42 to play. Unfortunately for Bulldog fans, it was short-lived. Very short-lived! One play and a spectacular YAC run later, Bama regained the lead courtesy of a 75-yd bomb to WR Ryan Williams. It wasn’t until Bama intercepted a Carson Beck pass in the end zone with 43 seconds left that the Tide finally secured the win.
And then there was the Oklahoma-Auburn contest. But at least it came with a little twist compared to the other edge-of-your-seat games this weekend. OU trailed 21-10 with less than 9 minutes to go and looked bad in the process. And I mean bad as in NOT GOOD! It was a continuation of what we’ve seen so far this year. Poor blocking, suspect play calling… just a dismal performance. As my mom would’ve said, the Sooners had no more business winning that game than the Man in the Moon. But suddenly, that mystical aura called Sooner Magic arrived on the scene. A 60-yd bomb from Michael Hawkins to JJ Hester gave OU life and set up a 2-yd Javontae Barnes touchdown run, which in turn set up the play of the game when Kip Lewis picked off a Payton Thorne pass with 4:14 to go and rumbled 63-yds to pay dirt and the lead. But what set this game apart from the others mentioned above is that OU’s comeback didn’t fall short. The Sooners came all the way back for the win! And there was much rejoicing in the Sooner Nation! You know, it feels good to know Sooner Magic has officially made the transition to the new conference. Now we know the rest of the SEC understands what lies ahead for them and that they too will eventually get to feel its wrath! Boomer, baby!
And speaking of games to the wire, our Week 5 Pick’em contest wasn’t any different. In fact, it was even closer than that! When all the dust finally settled, we had 3 players all claiming a piece of the weekly win! gcruse7, pippen and yours truly, EMan all posted identical 16-win, 174-point weeks to force a 3-way tie for first! And if truth be known, all 3 of us submitted the exact same scorecard! Great minds! A hearty congrats extended to my co-winners! Rounding out the rest of our Top Five this week, we have poh302 sitting in fourth, and cushcreekmont holding down fifth. Nice week, everyone!
Meanwhile, over in the race for the regular season title, SD-OU has retained his hold at the top of the leaderboard for the 4th consecutive week. As I said in our last write-up, time to start charging SD rent for the use of the penthouse! Still holding down second this week is Wishbone, who has occupied the runner-up spot for 3 of the last 4 weeks. The rest of the pack better start picking up the pace or these two may run away from the field! In third place this week we find cushcreekmont, followed by gcruse7 and Fly in fourth and fifth respectively. You can see all the year-to-date standings by clicking HERE.
So, now it’s time to move on to Week 6 and our next round of contests! The Sooners will be enjoying a much-needed Bye Week, so we will not find them in our lineup this go-round.
