pitch calling

I suspect it's different for each coach but what exactly do the pitching coaches call?
1. They obviously call basic pitches - fast ball, changeup, screw ball, etc.
2. do they call ball, strike, or low or high?

Can the call be: screwball low inside?

The next question obviously is:
What percentage of the time can good pitched actually throw what is called?

With the charts that they have on the armbands they can call probably anything you can imagine.

They call:
1 - type of pitch
2 - elevation (Some pitches will determine elevation)
3 - inside, outside, off plate
4 - speed

All this is charted and they grade the pitcher on the called pitch vs where it was thrown.

But please do not ask me how they do all that with just three signals on that chart. I have not figured that out at all.

I notice they change charts when they change pitchers. So #501 may be rise ball for Jordy and knuckle for Nicole. I’m sure the charts are customized to what each pitcher is able to throw.

Soooo......are the coaches talking to the pitcher electronically on their armbands? What about the catcher? How would she know where the pitch is going to go so it doesn't get past her????

Every player wears the armband. The pitcher and catcher both know what is coming.

I think the communication alternatives are near infinity. You can buy these things lots of places (yes, even amazon). My guess is that OU’s are customized and probably do get to the minutiae of pitch, location, etc.

From the ad it appears that the girls grow up with the armbands early on....

I’ve seen the chart that coaches use - it might be separated into 8-10 different pitches (pitch type, location, etc.) with 8-10 different numbers for each pitch - thus, the coach can call the same pitch 8 times in a row without ever using the same number.

My guess is they lay out the chart for each pitcher based on their abilities - once they have it laid out, they probably have an app/program than can randomize the numbers and thus have different sets of numbers as often as they want.

I've never coached at that level, so take this with a grain of salt.

When a catcher gives signs to the pitcher, they are indicating type of pitch (fastball, curve, change-up, etc). Typically only with the fastball, they also indicate location (inside, outside).

My guess is with these charts, OU has divided the strike zone into 4 or 9 zones and the number indicates which zone and what pitch. It seems logical that they could also call a pitch out of the strike zone.
