OU Women's Soccer in 'Kansas Week' - Drops 2nd Match this week to Kansas State

Post by OUBeliever56A »

The Oklahoma Sooner Women's Soccer Team spends the week on the road with both Kansas teams. They are in Lawrence on Thursday night @ 7 PM against Kansas (0-4-1 in Big 12 & 7-7-1 overall). They are in Manhattan on Sunday @ 1 PM against Kansas State (1-3-1 in Big 12 & 5-7-2 overall). The Sooners are favored over both with their 2-1-1 Big 12 record and 7-3-3 overall. But Kansas State did beat Baylor on last Sunday though.

Here is the staff writers article about this week's matches:

The Sooners could use two wins this week for 6 important points and need at least 4 points (a win and a tie). The Sooners play the next 5 consecutive Thursday's and Sunday's. TCU, Oklahoma and West Virginia are the only teams to do so in the Big 12. Within those five games, OU plays TCU and Texas. which are two of the best teams in the conference. Every point the Sooners can get in the other three (West Virginia is the 3rd game outside of this week) is very important.

Both games are on ESPN+ this week.

Good luck to the Sooner Ladies tonight and Sunday.

The Oklahoma Sooners traveled to Lawrence, KA on Thursday to play Kansas in the first match this 'weekend'. Despite playing with a lot of energy and effort, the Sooners dropped the match by a score of 1-3 against the Jayhawks. The staff writers article about the match is below.

https://soonersports.com/news/2022/10/1 ... n-lawrence

The Sooners did score first on a penalty kick for a foul against Kroflin in the right side of the penalty box. Hawkins smartly planted the ball into the goal on the right side at the 18th minute of the match in the 1st half. Kansas got on the scoreboard on two quick goals in the 22nd and 24th minutes on two "iffy" goals against the Sooner defense. The final Kansas score was in the 53rd minute on an unassisted goal.

Watching the match on ESPN+ it seemed that the Sooners were in a hurry to move the ball into the scoring area to shoot the ball. They seemed very 'hectic' in their play to me. The style of this team is to push forward with several players and work the ball into the scoring areas with some precision of late. Earlier in their stretch of good play the Sooners often worked from the outside in once the ball was in the opponents end of the pitch. Last night almost everything was from the middle of the field and the passes were long into the zone.

On defense the seemed to be less resistance than normal to Kansas bringing the ball across midfield towards the Sooner goal after Kansas controlled the ball or on steals from the Sooner offense. Oklahoma seemed very spread out across the field and towards the Kansas goal.

The Sooners need to regroup quickly before they play Kansas State in Manhattan on Sunday at 1 PM. It is four long drives for the Sooners in 4 or 5 days for the Sooners. They need to rest and recover from Thursday nights game to be ready to play on Sunday. After a surprising defeat to Kansas, the Sooners need to pick up a win against the Wildcats to remain in the Top 5 of the Big 12 teams.

Current Standings:

1st - Texas 5-0-1 - 16 points
2nd - TCU 4-0-2 - 14 points
3rd - Texas Tech 3-1-2 - 11 points
4th - Oklahoma State 2-1-2 - 8 points
5th - Oklahoma 2-2-1 - 7 points
6th - Baylor 2-3-0 - 6 points & West Virginia 1-1-3 - 6 points
8th - Kansas 1-4-1 - 4 points & Kansas State 1-4-1 - 4 points
10th - Iowa State 0-4-1 - 1 point
Good luck to the Sooner Soccer Team on Sunday.

There was a goal by Bri Amos that was called offside, but replay showed she was onside.

The replay I saw of the offsides play looked like a good call to me.

In their second math of the week in Kansas, the Sooners traveled to Manhattan to face Kansas State in an important match for Oklahoma. The Sooners came up a goal short in the match as Kansas State won 2-1 as the Wildcats scored a goal in each half while OU managed just one goal in between the two K-State goals.

Here is the staff writers article about the match.

https://soonersports.com/news/2022/10/1 ... tch-to-ksu

Since the Oklahoma Sooners streak of winning 7 out of 8 matches with the other match being a tie, the Sooners have now lost 3 of 4 matches with a tie in the other match. the tide has turned for the Sooners it seems.

I watched the match today on ESPN+. I thought that both of the Kansas State goals were due mostly to be caught shorthanded on defense after the possession of the ball changed in the midfield area and the Sooners were caught with only a couple defenders back to help the GK. In both cases Kansas State took advantage of the open paths to the goal. The Sooners are pushing defenders and midfield players forward at almost all times right now in an attempt to score. Doing that leaves them vulnerable to the quick change of possession threats in the midfield area or on set plays in the Sooners end of the pitch.

As the staff writers pointed out, the match was very physical between the two teams.

There was a change in the goal today for Oklahoma as Makinzie Short (Red-SR transfer from Nebraska) got the nod to start over Olivia Ramey (FR). With a minute left in the first half, Sheridan Michel left the game and did not play in the second half for the Sooners. Hopefully she recovers quickly as she and Hali Hartman really anchor the defensive back row for the Sooners.

Here are the current Big 12 Standings:

1st - Texas 5-0-1 - 16 points with 3 matches to play. (@ I-State, @ OSU and Oklahoma)
T-2nd - TCU 4-0-2 - 14 points with 3 matches to play. (Oklahoma, @ Baylor and Texas Tech)
T-2nd - Texas Tech - 14 points with 2 matches to play. (Baylor and @ TCU)
4th - Oklahoma State - 11 points with 3 matches to play. (W Virginia, Texas and @ Baylor)
5th - West Virginia - 9 points with 3 matches to play. (@ OK State, @ Oklahoma and K-State)
T-6th - Oklahoma - 7 points with 3 matches to play. (TCU, W Virginia and @ Texas)
T-6th - Kansas State - 7 points with 2 matches to play. (Kansas and @ W Virginia)
8th - Baylor - 6 points with 3 matches to play. (@ T Tech, TCU and @ OK State)
9th - Kansas - 4 points with 2 matches to play. (@ K-State and I-State)
10th - Iowa State - 1 point with 2matches to play. (Texas and @ Kansas)
The Top 8 Big 12 Teams advance to the Big 12 Soccer Tournament.

Of the teams in 6th or lower in the standings, Oklahoma and Baylor have the toughest schedule remaining. Kansas and Kansas State have the easiest but they have one less game to add points to their total. The Sooners need to figure out how to earn a couple of points and maybe a big win in their last 3 matches. If the Sooners can get to 10 points they can probably finish in the top 8 and perhaps not in 7th or 8th to avoid playing Texas or TCU. One thing to note is that both Kansas State and Kansas own the tiebreaker over Oklahoma due to their wins this week over the Sooners.

The Sooners play on Thursday night at John Crain Field at 7 PM.

Good luck to the Sooner ladies on Thursday night.
