The Oklahoma Sooners Women's Golf Team played very well in the afternoon round on Sunday in San Marcos, TX. Oklahoma shot a 1-under par round as a team to move up in the standings to 7th place. Here is the staff writers article about both rounds of play on Sunday for the Sooners.

https://soonersports.com/news/2022/10/2 ... -challenge

In the afternoon round, Fortuna (Team #1) shot 2-under par 70 to go with her earlier round of 71. She is 3-under thru 36 holes. Lang (Team #4) shot 1-under par 71 to add to her opening round 70 to also combine to shoot 3-under thru the first 36 holes on Sunday. Both Sooners are are 7th place individually in the tourney and are 3 shots out of the lead. Both Fortuna and Lang played very well on Sunday.

Winans (Team #3) rebounded very well on Sunday afternoon to shoot Even par with a 72. That was 6 shots better than her opening round of 78. Nelke (Team #2) improved to a 2-over 74 Sunday afternoon after an opening round of 77. Martinez (Team #5) had tough Sunday in Sam Marcos shooting a 76 followed by an 80. But her 76 in the opening round was the 3rd best score for the Sooners to help the team effort.

Playing individually, Vesely opened with a 5-over 77 but rebounded very well to shoot a 1-under 71 in the afternoon round. Her 4-over total is the 3rd best score for Oklahoma but she is playing outside the team in this tourney.

Good luck to the Sooners on Monday (today's) round. The shotgun start is at 8:30 AM this morning for the final round.

The Oklahoma Sooners Women's Golf Team completed play in San Marcos, TX today in the Jim West Challenge. Once again the Sooners were led by Fortuna and Lang as Oklahoma shot 4-over par in the third round with Fortuna shooting 2-under and Lang shooting 1-over on the day. The Sooners total of 9-over for the 54 holes placed them in 9th place out of the 15 teams in the tourney. today 3 separate Sooners had double bogeys today that hurt the effort.

Mikhaela Fortuna (Team #1) played very well in the tourney. She was able to shoot 5-under par for the tourney which placed her in a T-4th with two other golfers. Fortuna shot 71, 70, 70 in her three rounds. Fortuna has had a very good fall season and she saved the best for last. Nina Lang (Team #4) also turned in a good effort as she shot 2-under for the tourney. That placed he in a T-11th with 5 other golfers. The Sooners used or counted Fortuna's and Lang's scores in all three rounds.

The other three Sooners, Nelke (Team #2), Winans (Team #3) and Martinez (Team #5) each had a bad round that was not used by the Sooners. The two that were used were a total of 9-over in round 1, 2-over in round 2 and 5-over in round 3. Winans shot 224, 8-over for the tourney. Nelke shot 227, 11-over for the tourney and Martinez shot 231, 15-over for the tourney.

Playing as an individual player in the tourney was Kaylee Vesely who shot 221, 5-over for the 3 rounds. If Vesely would have been part of the 5-women on the Sooner team, the Sooners would have shot 6 shots better and finished with a score of 867, 3-over, and they would have tied for 6th n the tourney.

The Sooners have found a true #1 player this fall in Fortuna. If they can find a solid #2, #3 and #4 player week-in-week-out between Lang, Winans, Vesely and Barber (who did not play this week) they could perhaps improve their finishes in the upcoming spring. Nelke and Martinez should compete with those players for the 5th spot on the team for tourneys this fall.

The next tournament for the Women is in February 2023 in Arizona.
