The #1 ranked and Defending National Champion Oklahoma Women's Gymnastics Team went into Baton Rouge on Monday afternoon and before a full house of hostile fans defeated #10-ranked LSU 197.600 to 197.450. That slim 0.150 margin of victory was well earned by the Sooners.

Going on the road against a strong team this early in the season will be something that yields future benefits for the team especially the younger Sooners. Coach Kindler has the Sooners performing well. Yesterday the Sooners did lack those looked-for crisp stuck landing on several performances. I am sure working on 'foreign' devices and floors can cause some adjustments that have to be made. Learning those little adjustments is key to performing down the line for the Sooners.

Here is a very good staff writers article about the dual meet yesterday afternoon.

Here is the final 'Meet Results" showing all the scores.

It is interesting to me that OU continued their strong performances from the 1st weekend in Vegas of all scores being 9.800 or better. Yesterday only two scores were not 9.800 or better. Both freshman performing for the Sooners scored one 9.750 yesterday. Torres, competing in the All-Around received a 0.10 deduction for stepping out of the boundary on her floor exercise as her score was lowered from 9.85- to 9.750. Her tumbling run ended with her landing and surprisingly bouncing high of the mat which propelled her forward to step out of the boundary with one foot. The other 9.750 was from Ava Siegfeldt on her beam routine after a bit of a bobble on the beam where she had to regain her balance.

The Sooners won or tied three of the apparatus yesterday. The Sooners won the vault and beam, tied the floor and trailed LSU by 0.50 on the bars.

These Sooners scored 9.900 or better yesterday;

Sophomore Danielle Sievers on Vault - 9.900
Junior Kathryn LeVasseur on Vault - 9.925
Senior Ragan Smith on Bars - 9.950
Sophomore Jordan Bowers on Bars - 9.900
Sophomore Jordan Bowers on Beam - 9.950
Senior Ragan Smith on Bars - 9.925
Sophomore Jordan Bowers on Bars - 9.925

In the All-Around Sophomore Jordan Bowers finished 2nd with a 39.650. Freshman Faith Torres finished 4th with a 39.325.

All-in-all it was a strong win for the Sooners in the land of the Bengal Tigers.

The Sooners next meet is in Norman at Lloyd Noble Center against Utah at 6:45 PM on Sunday night. It is going to be Alumni Night as the National Championship Celebration Night for the Sooners. Utah, ranked #6 currently, has three scores of 197.750 already in 2023 which were all scored last weekend.

I am sure that LNC will be full to see the great action on Sunday night. The meet will be televised on ESPN if you cannot get to LNC.

Good luck to the women on Sunday!

Excellent recap. The Sooners seemed a bit flat to me. They “hit” all 24 routines, but were just so so on execution, with only a couple of exceptions. Good experience in front of a raucous crowd.

I did feel there was some biased scoring, particularly during the beam/floor rotation. The crowd was really roaring for the Tiger gymnasts and it is just natural for the judges to get sucked in.

One example - as noted above, Ava (beam balance check) and Faith (floor out of bounds) both had noticeable errors. The Tigers had gymnasts with very similar errors and got higher scores. A Tiger gymnast also had significant balance check on the beam AND had a step on the dismount. Ava nailed her dismount, but LSU got 9.775 vs Ava’s 9.75. Similarly - in the floor, an LSU gymnast bounced too high and also went out of bounds, with both feet ultimately touching over the line. Faith only had one foot out of bounds, but got a .50 lower score. Just one amateur opinion!

But, overcoming these challenges is a step in the process. Big meet against Utah coming Sunday.

It’s also a good dress rehearsal for the SEC crowds in general, whenever the move happens. Every venue from Mizzou to Florida is pretty raucous and especially on the road you have to zone them out and leave everything out on the mat.
