Actually, the first Sooner score was 197.925 - typo I think. Ordinarily I wouldn’t correct like this, but .925 is a LOT better than .425…

Here is the staff writers article about the #1 Sooners Women's Gymnastics Win over #5 Utah last night. 197.925 to 197.275.

https://soonersports.com/news/2023/1/23 ... -no-5-utah

First off, I am surprised that the crowd last night was the3rd biggest in history. I guess I was probably at LNC for the #1 and #2 crowds last year. LNC just did not seem that full.

I thought eh judging was a little tough last night on both teams. Not because I have a great deal of knowledge, but because there was only two 10's given last night. One to Sooner Allie Stern on Vault and one to Maile O'Keefe of Utah. And both of those were by only 1 judge which does not result in a 10 for either gymnasts. The two teams are very good. #1 and #5. C'mon judges, there had to be one 10 somewhere last night.

I remember Coach Kindler talking about the importance of the lead-off gymnasts on each device scoring a 9900 to get the team going properly. The Sooners did that once last night with Sievers on Vault. In fact, one was even a 9.775 last night due to Johnson just barely stepping over the line on one of her tumbling runs.

The Sooners also ended up using scores of under 9.80 on three events.

On the Vault, the lowest score used was a 9.850 for a 49.650. the other four scores were 9.925 or better.

On the Bars, the Sooners used three scores of 9.875 with the other two scores being 9.900 for a 49.425. Torrez and Bowers both got one 9.95 from only one judge. In both cases the other judge scored the same routines as a 9.850. Smith's bobble on the bars put pressure on Bowers and Davis to finish well for the Sooners.

On the Beam, after the 2nd routine for the Sooners the pressure was on for the Sooners. The Sooners were able to rebound and have three scores of 9.900 or better but they did use a 9.725. That yielded the 49.350 total on the Beam. That was the low point for the Sooners last night.

On the Floor, the Sooners had to use two scores under 9.900. My eyes thought that Fletcher's routine was really good to just receive a 9.850 from two judges. Torrez an Bowers finished strongly for the Sooners as the two of them battled for the All-Around with Torrez just edging out Bowers by the 0.025 difference on their Floor exercises. The Sooners totaled 49.50 on the Floor.

The Vault carried the Sooners to the 197.925 team score which won by 0.650 points over Utah.

I wonder if the Beam routines will be shuffled or if there will be a change in the participants in the next competition for the Sooners. Hopefully the Sooners will become more consistent also as they need to eliminate the low score early in the event routines. The first couple of Sooners need to post a 9.875 or 9.850 at least to get things started. Oklahoma only did that one time last night.

The Sooners next action is in Denver. The Sooners will travel to No. 8 Denver for a conference clash on Sunday, Jan. 29, at 3 p.m. CT. The meet will broadcast on Altitude Sports TV.

The Sooners are great to watch in person.

Huge vault score, after struggling (by Sooner standards) in the first 2 meets. No reason this squad should be under 49.5 in vault.

Ragan Smith had a small miscue on bars for a 9.7, but responded with huge pressure-filled 9.95 on beam and 9.875 on floor.

Likewise, freshman Faith Torrez opened with 9.755 on vault (low score for vault last night) and then went 9.9, 9.9 and 9.95 to win all-around. Impressive from a freshman.

Beam - in the second position, Ava Siegfeidt has a fall and posts 9.225 and Jordan Bowers posts 9.725 in the third spot. Pressure. Sooners respond with 9.9, 9.95 and 9.9 to post decent 49.350.

Second 197.925 of the season - strong, but not yet elite. Sooners have not yet put consistent scores on all 4 events.

Sooners have now posted strong scores in Vault, beam and Floor. Bars still haven’t hit their stride.
