The #1 Oklahoma Sooners qualified for the Regional Finals on Saturday afternoon at 4:45 PM at LNC with their 1st Place finish in the evening event of the Norman Regional. The Sooners finished with a 197.925 on the night. Oklahoma had event scores of Beam 49.475, Floor 49.450, Vault 49.400 and 49.600 on Bars.

I thought there were some key performances for the Sooners on the night.

- Starting on the Beam, the Regan Smith in the final spot of the rotation, performed a beautiful routine and received four Perfect 10's. Her final score lifted the Sooners event score by 0.275 points.
- On the Floor, Faith Torrez in the final position of the rotation scored a 9.925 on her routine which lifted the Sooners score by 0.200 points.
- On the Vault, Olivia Trautman in the final spot with a 9.950 from all four judges lifted the Sooners score by 0.200 points. I think the only Sooner that stuck their landing on Vault was Trautman.
- Danielle Sievers in the leadoff position on Bars, received one 10.0 from a judge with two 9.95s and one 9.90 for a score of 9.95. Jordan Bowers, in the fifth spot of the rotation, received three Perfect 10s and one 9.995 from the judges for her score of 10.0 to produce the 49.600 score on the Bars.

The Regional results on Thursday produced the four teams that will compete on Saturday afternoon. In the afternoon group, Kentucky (197.475) and Alabama (197.375 advanced. In the evening group, Oklahoma (197.925) and Ohio State (197.350) advanced. There was drama on the last rotation last night as Ohio State edged Arkansas out of the Saturday final by the final Beam routine by Ohio State.

Sooners Jordan Bowers finished 3rd in the All-Around with her 39.500 with Audrey Davis in fifth with her 39.300.

Here is the staff writers article about the action on Thursday night.

I will make a comment about the attendance, or the lack of attendance at the evening session. I was fairly concerned about being able to get a good seat with my General Admission ticket, but with the lower seats less than half full, the announcers asked everyone to move down to the lower seats and I promptly did just that. Sooner Nation could have done much better supporting the event. I certainly hope that the crowd is much bigger on Saturday afternoon. I do know and understand that there are many events going on this weekend, but the Women Gymnastics Team deserves a good crowd. I hope the fans show up on Saturday.

When you are able to watch these events in person, you can notice little things that make a great deal. As the Sooners were warming up for the Beam, their opening event, It seemed that veteran Jenna Dunn would be the odd-performer out of the rotation. There was never a waiver in her demeanor, Dunn promptly took her position in the corner of the Sooner bench area closest to the Beam area and applauded and encouraged the other six performers on the Beam for Oklahoma in a great manner. While I am sure that she might have known she would not perform prior to that moment, but it still shows a great deal of maturity and 'team spirit' to just do her next job, be the biggest cheerleader for the Beam performers. I do tend to look for these things, but they are almost as important as the Perfect 10's or every stuck landing. Great Job, Jenna Dunn!

Good luck to the Sooners on Saturday afternoon in the Regional Finals.

OU had a tough meet. However, as 56 noted, some great scores too. The good news is our “troubles” were bobbles and extra steps, not falls, out of bounds, etc.

Below summarizes the NQS (borrowed from Austin’s threads) and the scores yesterday. Even OU’s “tough” score beats the other 3 teams averages. However, each of the other teams probably can exceed OU’s “tough” score on a given day. So, our ladies will need to be better tomorrow night.

OU BAMA KY OSU

NQS reg season:
Vault 49.555 49.385 49.405 49.325

OU will need to bring its A game in order to win the National Championship. I expect strong competition from Florida, Utah, and Michigan. I do expect them to be prepared and to perform at a championship level. Last night was disappointing. I am hopeful the team learns from this. Do I believe OU wins the NC? YES (with the right mindset)

The Oklahoma Women's Gymnastics Team proved once again, just how good the Sooners' Program is, in the Regional Finals at LNC.

Starting on the Bars, the Sooner Women put up a 49.675 team score that outdistanced the other three finalist teams, Alabama, Kentucky and Ohio State by 0.225 points. Bowers turned in a 9.975 performance with Davis and Trautman putting up 9.950 routines. Bowers had to 10's on her scorecard and Davis had one.

On the Beam, that treacherous 4-inch wide elevated beam, the Sooners started unexpectantly. Dunn, the reliable veteran who just always turns in a 9.875 score at least to get things started on the beam. On her backward flips pass, she had a balance issue and fell to the floor. Trautman, the ultra veteran who has performed so well in pressure moments, took to the beam to right-the-ship for the Sooners. Once again, on those backward flips, Trautman lost her balance and went to the floor. Her 9.300 would prove to be important however. The Sooners simultaneously fell to fourth on the big LNC scoreboard as Jordan Bowers waited for the score to be finalized for Trautman. Like the young star she is, Bowers turned in an impressive routine for a 9.925 to get the Sooners started on a comeback. Faith Torrez was next up as the freshman was fabulous with a 9.975 with two 10's on her scorecard. Davis was next up and she added the third impressive score with a 9.925. When Smith jumped up on the beam, the Sooners had a shot to salvage a score on the Beam. Smith's core of 9.950 completed the mini-comeback on the event for a 49.075 score which is almost unbelievable while counting a 9.300. Still the Sooners 'gave-up' a minimum of 0.250 to Alabama, with a deficit of 0.400 to Ohio State and .0.500 to Kentucky. But the Sooners were in 3rd place when the Beam rotation ended. The Sooners were 0.200 behind Kentucky and 0.100 behind Ohio State.

Going to the Floor, the Sooners could see a way to dig their way out of their deficit, with superb efforts on the Floor and the Vault. The Sooners did just that. The Sooners totalled a 49.675 on the Floor with three 9.500 scores from Bowers, Sievers and Torrez with Smith adding a 9.925 and Fletcher and Davis scoring a 9.900. Torres picked up one 10 on her routine. When the Floor was over, Oklahoma was back in first place. The Sooners once again won the event over the other three schools with their 49.675.

On the Vault, an event that depends so much on the landing, the Sooners stuck the landing i think 4 times of the 6 vaulters. The Sooners finished with a strong rotation with Lavasseur leading the way with a perfect 10 that had the house rocking in the 3rd performance for the Sooners. Sievers had opened the event with a 9.985 for the Sooners followed by Stern (in her final event at LNC) with a 9.900. The Sooners were now very close to securing a win. After scores of 9.850 by Bowers and a 9.875 by Davis, the scoring looked all but clinched with a big score for the Sooners. Trautman, in her final appearance in LNC, put up a 9.975 with two 10's on her card to put up a final Sooner score that no team could catch. Sooners WIN! The 49.625 team score on the vault also won the 3rd event for the Sooners.

While their were many clutch performances by the Sooner Women on Saturday, none were bigger than the four performers on the beam after the two falls to open the rotation. It is very tough to turn that around. Bowers, Torrez, Davis and Smith did just that. Big Time, pressure, Big Time results by the four Sooners!

Bowers won the all-around for the eighth time this season with a 39.700, just shy of her career high of 39.750. Davis posted a career-high 39.650 to tie for second place in the all-around.

Here is the staff writers article about the comeback win for the Sooners.

https://soonersports.com/news/2023/4/1/ ... semifinals

The Sooners will compete in the NCAA Championships semifinals on Thursday, April 13 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, against Kentucky, No. 4 seed UCLA and No. 5 seed Utah. The top two teams will advance to the NCAA Four on the Floor on Saturday, April 15, along with two other squads.

OU has finished in the top four of the NCAA Championships in each of the last nine seasons and in 11 of the last 12. It has finished in the top two in each of the last six seasons and eight of the last nine.

Here to great practices between now and the Championships and good health for the team.
