Sooners score 2 against Canady, Bahl shuts out Stanford: Win 2-0

Post by OUBeliever56A »

The Oklahoma Sooners did exactly what they needed to do against Stanford. They won! They scored 2 runs against a pitcher that had given up 9 runs all season in 116.1 IP.

They Sooners extended many at bats and upped the pitch count against Canady and it paid off in the 5th inning. The Sooners managed to get on top of three pitches that resulted in 2 singles. Alynah Torres someway got the bat head up to the pitch that was away and hit it hard to single to CF to get the 5th inning started with 1 out. Avery Hodge was called to pinch run for Torres at first base. An out later, Rylie Booner squared up a pitch and hit a line drive to LF in front of the fielder for a single and moved Hodge to second base. Then the Big 12 Player of the Year, Jayda Coleman, stepped up like she has done on several occasions and somehow squared up a pitch on an 0-2 count for a one hop single to LF that bounded off the LF's glove and behind her almost to the warning track. Hodge was headed to around third base as the ball rolled away from the LF as Boone followed with her speed and scored easily from 1B as Stanford tracked down the ball with Coleman ending up at second base with the Sooners scoring 2 runs. The play was ruled a single, with an error for 1 earned run and 1 unearned run against Canady. It would have been interesting to see if Hodge would have been safe at home plate as she was just getting to 3B as the ball got to the left fielder.

With the score 2-0 after the top of the 6th, the Stanford coach more or less put up the surrender flag and replaced Canady with Alana Vawter to pitch the bottom of the sixth to prevent Canady from throwing her 100th pitch of the day through 5 innings. The Sooners loaded the bases against Vawter in the 6th but the Sooners stuck out for the last out of the bottom of the 6th. I think the strategy was to save Canady pitches as she will now have to pitch tomorrow again.

Meanwhile, Bah had kept the Cardinal off the scoreboard with strong to great pitching throughout the game as no runner advanced past 2B. Bahl had three 3-up-and-3-down innings and 4 innings where a runner reached base. When Stanford pushed a runner up to reach second base, Bahl limited Stanford to 0 for 6 with 4 Ks to end the threats in those three innings. Bahl tossed a CG, shutout Win as she allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and 1 HB in her 7innings with 11 Ks on 107 pitches. I think one hit ball, maybe two actually hit the of grass off of Bahl today. That is a huge key for Bahl as she keeps the ball down and on the ground 80% of the time.

Canady and Vawter allowed the Sooners 6 hits and 2 walks with 8 Ks. The eight Ks is an indication of how good Canady was today.

Coleman was the hitting star for Oklahoma with her two hits that included the game-winning hit in the 5th. It was critical that the Sooners put those 3 hits together in one inning to help the Sooners pick up their 57th win and their 49th straight win during this season. The shutout by Bahl and the defense was the 33rd shutout of the season for the Sooners which ties a Sooner season record for shutouts.

It was a very hard earned win by the Sooners against a very good, hot pitcher for Stanford. Kudos to Canady for her effort. She is the real deal for Stanford.

Oklahoma now plays Tennessee on Saturday at 3 PM in the nationally televised game on ABC. Tennessee defeated Alabama 10-5 with a strong offense and Rogers only pitching 4 innings with Gottschall pitching the last three. Tennessee hit 3 doubles and 2 HRs and won without a hit from Kiki Milloy. Alabama sent Torrence, Salter and Esman to the circle with Torrance picking up the loss.

Alabama and Stanford will play at 6 PM CST tomorrow night in an elimination game. I think the starting pitchers will be Canady and Fouts, but it could be Torrence for Alabama.

The Sooners advance to play on Saturday. The game will be against Tennessee as the rematch of a game in 2022 will be prefaced by a full recall of that game last year at the Mary Nutter tournament where Oklahoma defeated Tennessee 9-8 in 10 innings in front of probably 5000 people surrounding the field. Jordy Bahl got the win as she started the game and finished the game as a reliever after 1.2 innings by Nicole May. Ashley Rogers only pitched in relief for Tennessee and got the loss as she pitched 4.2 innings. Coleman picked up the game-winning hit in the bottom of the 10th with 2 outs with a HR with Taylon Snow on base (international tie-breaker) for a 2-run HR in the memorable come-from-behind win.

It will be a very good game as I think OU and Tennessee are the two best teams in the WCWS. although Florida State is very good also.

Great win today by the Sooners!

If orange aggy vs FSU and Utah vs Washington aren't played tonight, when will they be played? ASAP, ie tomorrow? If so, or in any case, how will the schedule adjustments complicate things?
