Sooner Volleyball Travels to UCF for Thur & Fri Matches at 6 PM!

Post by OUBeliever56A »

The Oklahoma Sooner Women's Volleyball Team travels to Orlando for a Thursday/Friday 6PM match on both nights against the UCF Golden Knights. UCF owns am 11-2 overall record and a 2-0 record in Big 12 conference play. UCF swept Cincinnati in two matches last weekend 3-1 and 3-0. UCF is essentially ranked #29 in the nation. Oklahoma is 6-5 overall and 0-2 in Big 12 matches. The Sooners lost two matches to Texas last weekend both is straight sets 0-3.

Most of the numbers for the two teams are very close until you look at errors and serving. Oklahoma has 225 attack errors in 11 matches and 41 sets while UCF has only 208 attack errors in 13 matches and 48 sets. in service errors, OU has 135 in those same 41 sets while UCF has only 122 in 48 sets. UCF also owns a Service Ace advantage with 124 in 48 sets while Oklahoma has 60 in 41 sets. UCF serves at an 89% serve-in rate while OU holds a 82.5% serve-in rate. UCF has a service ace% of 11.2% while OU picks up 5.2% of their serves as aces. UCF averages 1 more Dig per set and and slightly less receiving errors per set.

Positive numbers for Oklahoma are Kills with 564 in 41 sets (13.76 per set), while UCF has 647 in 48 sets (13.48 per set). OU leads slightly in assists per set and in blocks with 90.5 Block Points against UCF's 80.0 Block Points. In Points, the Sooners top 5 hitters averages 15.21 Points/Set while UCF averages 15.27 Points/Set.

To improve their chances to win one or both of the matches against UCF, the Sooners will need to serve much better with less serving errors and a few more aces, If they can do that, they can help themselves a great deal. Coach Mansfield is looking for answers to the Sooner serving game as he has sent 11 Sooners to the serving line. By contrast, UCF has sent basically just 6 players to the serving line outside of 31 attempts by 2 players. The Sooners will also have to receive serve well and move the ball to the setter in good position with their first touch more often. Much more often against what looks like a good serving team in UCF.

The other area that the Sooner will need to improve is reducing attack errors. The ability to eliminate errors is a by-product of the handling the UCF serves well with their first touch. If the Sooners can consistently move the ball to their setter, they will have better results as they attack.

If the Sooners can do those two things and still maintain a block advantage over UCF which looks to be the case by the stats, the Sooners can have a good chance to upset the Golden Knights. Oklahoma needs a win this weekend to post the first Big 12 victory under Coach Mansfield.

Oklahoma is very close to being successful this season. They have lost several sets during the last quarter of the set when points are critical and lead to winning the set. IF they can begin to pick up those sets, the matches become a set longer or even two sets longer and OU increases their chances to win. Oklahoma can win with Shelton, Preston and Burts supplying the offensive punch if they can minimize the errors and serve much better. To me, Chamberlain sets the ball very well if she is not running after the first touch and Kemohah leads the defensive effort well. I hope we see improvement at the service line this weekend along with fewer errors overall.

Good luck to the Sooners on Thursday and Friday in Orlando.

The Oklahoma Sooners arrived in Orlando to play the UCF Knights with a bit of bad news. From the ESPN+ broadcast, it was mentioned that Payton Chamberlain had not practiced all week due to a sore knee (I believe on her right leg). When the starting lineups were announced, Emma Henry and Rylee Fay were in the Setter spots with the Sooners using a 6-2 format instead of the 5-1 lineup as they have been using. The UCF Knights powered their way past the Sooners in the first set 25-13 with 13 Kills and 1 service ace while OU committed 12 errors and struggled to get 'in system' during the set. The Sooners did not play well in any phase of the set. The Sooners earned two points while serving 14 times. They had 7 Kill errors and 7 Kills with 0 service aces and 0 block points.

In the second set, with the same strategy, UCF streaked out to a 7-2 lead over the Sooners. After a OU timeout, the Sooners substituted Chamberlain into the lineup to play Setter. Oklahoma rallied a bit and got as close as 3 points at 18-21 with ball in hand and serving. Oklahoma served up an error and then made three straight attack errors to drop the second set 18-25.

Down 2 sets to 0, the Sooners needed a big 3rd set to get back into the match. Oklahoma did not score a point on their serve until the 6th rotation on offense when Callie Kemohah served for 2 points with one ace, to bring the score to a 0ne point set at 7-8. Chamberlain followed with 2 points on her serve with one ace, to move ahead 10-9 in the next rotation. After a side out by UCF, the Knights ran off 3 points on and ace and two Sooners errors to lead 13-10. OU called a timeout to slow the momentum for UCF. UCF scored one more point on a Kill before OU sided-out UCF with the score 14-11 in favor of UCF. Trailing 16-20, Kemohah again had a good service rotation with OU picking up 3 points with one ace and the score narrowed to 20-19 before UCF picked a Kill by Ava Armour to make the score 21-19.

Lydia Burts picked up a solo block on the next point to make the score 21-20 with OU picking up the serve opportunity. Three (3) straight attack errors by Oklahoma moved the score to 24-20. Alexis Shelton picked up a Kill point and then UCF made an error on a Kill attempt to make the score 24-22. The set and match ended on another Ava Armour Kill.

The Knights won 3 sets to 0 sets for the Sooners. Here is the Sooner staff wrtiers article about the UCF victory.

A few trends have developed with the Sooner play this season.

1) The Sooners do not serve well. In this match the Sooners the Sooners served only 39 of their 53 serves into the court of play. That is a 73.6% serve-in%. That has to improve. In addition to that the Sooners have too many service errors. In this match they had 14 errors while they were serving for 14 easy points for UCF. The Sooners picked up 14 points on their serve in the match with 6 of their points on service aces. 14 points out of 54 opportunities for a 25.9 scoring % on serve. That has to improve. First serve errors are tough to overcome and that happened 11 times on Thursday.

2) OU continues to have a high number of errors on offense and defense. Oklahoma had 27 errors on attacks and receptions in the match with 9 in each set. With the service errors added in the Sooners made 41 errors. That is 41 of the 75 points that UCF needed to win in straight sets or 54.7% of the points needed. What the numbers do not tell is the number of poor first touches by the Sooners which take OU 'out-of-system' on the offensive end. Too many times the 2nd touch for the Sooners is made with the Sooners running to get to the ball or from behind the 8 foot-line. It is difficult to be efficient when that is the case.

3) OU is not a good blocking team on defense. I know the Sooners do not have good size, but they need to figure out how to pick up blocking points or at least steer the ball into corridors to the defensive back row for plays on the attack hits from the other team. OU had 6 block points in the match with 5 coming in the final set when OU had a chance to win. A team simply has to have more than 1 block in 2 sets. Burts had 4 solo blocks of the 6 points. OU is very weak on the outside blocks IMO.

One thing to feel good about is this. In the match last night, the Sooners were outscored 32 to 15 with Chamberlain not in the lineup. But with Chamberlain on the floor, the Sooners were only outscored 43 to 38.. That is close enough to feel that the Sooners do have the ability to play with UCF.

UCF does serve extremely well. They only had 8 errors in 73 attempts while serving difficult serves to return. They also have a good attacking game with two strong hitters in Armour and Wilson. The Knights are a strong VB team and I can see why they are 12-2.

The Sooners are now 6-6 on the season. Hopefully Chamberlain can play tonight without potential for more damage to her leg. The Sooners need her as the center of the offense if OU has any chance. The Sooners need to serve much better and they need to receive much better to give the Sooner hitter a better chance to be successful. I think that inserting defensive specialist into the back row for front row players would help the Sooners to be better on offense. That first touch is so important. I understand the Sooners want to stay with at tller lineup when they can, but the handling of the ball has to improve on defense.

Good luck to the Sooners tonight at 6 PM against UCF.

The Oklahoma Sooner Women's Volleyball team took the floor again last night to face the UCF Knights. With some help from 'RahOKU1978', I realized that the Sooners had played 11 sets of volleyball without winning a set. Granted, that was against teams that were in the 'rankings'. There were the last two sets against UCLA, there were 6 sets against Texas and then 3 more sets against UCF on Thursday night. Many teams would not win a set against those teams in consecutive matches. Many, many teams. The bright spot in that run of sets was that there were 7 sets of the 11 that were either a 2-point set (5) or a 3-point set (2). The Sooners have been close to winning more than half of those 11 sets.

In the first two sets on Friday night against UCF, the number grew to 13 sets without a win with the 1st set being another 2-point loss. With Chamberlain back in the lineup at Setter, the Sooners played well in the 1st set. The Sooners held a 23-20 lead with the ball in hand. A service error by OU started a run of 5 straight points on a hitting error by OU and 3 straight kill points by UCF to win the set 25-23. Once again, close for the Sooners but they faltered down the critical final points. In the second set that followed, UCF broke out to an early 4 or 5 point lead and the Sooners were not able to close the gap and lost the set 18-25.

In the 3rd set, Oklahoma jumped out to a 3, then 4, then 5 point lead at 16-11. But, UCF retook the lead on a service run to make the score 19-20 in favor of UCF. Five straight attack points fueled that run by UCF. the score was retired at 21-21. From there the teams traded points until 23-23. OU's Kelsey Carrington gave OU a one point lead on a kill from the right side of the court. On OU's serve that followed, a tough hard serve by Mele Corral-Blagojevich (MCB) was not handled on the return touches to give OU the set 25-23 Sooners. Whew! They had broken the streak. The match was now a 2 sets to 1 set match in favor of UCF.

In the fourth set the score was very close throughout the set. There were 15 tie scores and the lead changed hands 4 times. Looking through the recap, neither team held more than a 3-point lead during the set. UCF picked up a kill point on a MCB serve to lead the set 23-20. But OU fought back on Kills by Alexis Shelton and Taylor Preston to make it a 1-point set at 23-22. An attack error by UCF tied the score at 23-23. An attack point by UCF and an attack error by UCF raised the score to 24-24. With ball in hand and serving, the Sooners gave up a point on an attack error on a block by UCF. A big smash by UCF's Clark ended the set and the match with her Kill point, 26-24. UCF won the match 3 sets to 1 set.

Here is the Sooner staff wrtiers article about Friday's UCF match.

https://soonersports.com/news/2023/9/29 ... to-knights

In my post about Thursday's match, I detailed 3 points that the Sooners needed to improve. Well they did that in Friday's match.

1. The Sooners DID serve better. On Thursday they had 14 service errors in 55 attempts for a 25.4% of failed serves. On Friday, the Sooners had 11 service errors in 91 attempts for a 12.1%. That is a 50% improvement. The Sooners had 6 service aces in both matches for consistency but the %-bases did go down on Friday. But the Sooners put the ball in play off of the serve much better on Friday.

2. The Sooners did reduce their errors in the match on Friday. On Thursday thay had 41 errors in 3 sets (128 points). On Friday, the Sooners had 47 errors in 4 sets (189 points). Thursday's numbers equaled 32.0% errors on points for OU. Friday's numbers equaled 24.9% for a 25% decrease.

3. The Sooners did pick up more blocks in the Friday match. OU had 12.0 Block Points verses 6.0 Block Points on Thursday. That is one (1) ore block per set for the Sooners. More importantly, the Sooners were a presence at the net during most of Friday's action. On Thursday, the Sooner were not strong at the net.

I thought Alexis Shelton (23.0 points), Hannah Pfiffner (10.0 points), Lydia Burts (9.0 Points), Kelsey Carrington (8.0 points) and Taylor Preston (10.5 Points) all attacked the net well on Friday. But Shelton had almost the same number of opportunities that Pfiffner/Burts/Carrington had. The Sooners need a bit more production from Preston. I thought Payton Chamberlain played well at Setter, with a tender knee. It will hopefully be helpful for her knee that the Sooners just play one match next week and no back-to-back matches. I am not sure that knees get 'better' but maybe it heals a bit next week. Almost all of the Sooner servers did serve better on Friday, Ireland McNees, Callie Kemohah and MCB all served well on Friday. On the returns by the Sooners, 56 Digs (14.0 per set) which was much better than the 18 (6.0 per set) on Thursday. Kemohah, MCB and Chamberlain all had double-digit Digs. But the Sooners did have ore receiving errors with 13 versus 5 on Friday. That might have been the stat that was important on Friday for the Sooners.

I will say this again if I have not already, The UCLA-Texas-UCF string of 5 matches is a very tough stretch in the schedule. Let's not forget that the Sooners did defeat UCLA in their first match 3 sets to 2 sets for a big win for the Sooners to make it six tough matches in a row! Outside of BYU and Iowa State (Texas also), I am not sure that another Big 12 team would have different results in that stretch of matches. It is a tough stretch. And just for good measure, BYU comes to Norman next Saturday for a 2 PM first serve. The BYU (#9) that was ranked one-spot above Texas (#10) in the last rankings. But, Texas has defeated BYU in Austin 3 sets to 1 set on both Thursday and Friday night. That may just increase the determination by BYU to come to Norman and try to re-establish themselves in the Big 12 next Saturday.

OU is now 6-7 for the season and 0-4 in the Big 12. I am willing to let the season play out and believe that as the Sooner Volleyball Team mature as a team that has been quickly put together in the offseason that they will start to win more of these close sets and will start to win more matches. I think they have the talent to do that. Almost everything aspect is improving in some way. I am still hoping for a top half finish by the Sooners in the Big 12.
