Sooner Men's BB hosts #1 Houston at LNC in a 7 PM game Tonight!

Post by OUBeliever56A »

The Oklahoma Sooner Men's Basketball Team will host the #1 Houston Cougars and ex-OU Coach Kelvin Sampson at Lloyd Noble Center in a 7 PM tipoff. Houston has won 6 games in a row while OU has lost 3 of their last 4 games. Most think that OU needs another win or two to guarantee a tourney bid in the NCAAs. It is interesting to me that only 5 Big 12 teams have 20 or more wins. In addition to that, 12 of the 14 teams in the Big 12 have lost at least 6 games in conference. The Big 12 conference play has been tough on all the teams in 2024 adding losses to their record.

Every win is important at this point in the season for the Sooners. There is a need to find a scoring punch down the stretch and to continue to play the tough defense that they have played most of the season. It will be a tall order tonight to defeat Houston, even at home, but I remember a very big win last season over Alabama in a game no one gave OU a shot at winning.

The Big 12 conference contest will air on the Sooner Sports Radio Network (KRXO 107.7 FM The Franchise in Oklahoma City; KTBZ 1430 AM in Tulsa; Varsity Radio App) with Toby Rowland and Kevin Henry announcing and be broadcast by ESPN2 with Rich Hollenberg (PxP) and Chris Spatola (analyst) on the call.

Here is the Sooner staff writers article about the game tonight.

It will be along day today with two OU softball games at Love's Field at 11 AM and 1:45 PM so it will be go home let out the dog and grab a bite before going back to the LNC parking lot about 6 PM. I hope their is a good crowd tonight for the men.

Good luck tonight to the Sooner men.

Many Sooner fans wanted to see the Sooner Men's Basketball play a high level game against a really good team. Well, if they watched the game last night between the Sooners and the #1 Houston Cougars, they had their chance to see just that. The Sooners played very well except for a brief spurt in the 2nd half where Houston built up a lead, before OU rallied back to time the game with 11 seconds left in the game at 85-85. On a very tough contested play, Houston missed a close jumper and battled for the rebound or loose ball which ever you prefer before [Edit: the game winner was made by Jamal Shead not Emanuel Sharp] picked up the ball and shot from the right side from about 7 feet to score with 0.4 seconds left in the game. The Sooners were unable to get a shot off in that 0.4 of a second.

The Houston Cougars are the real thing. They are tough on the perimeter and shoot the ball very well. It seems like every player for the Cougars can go score against anyone guarding them. They are talented and play very hard starting with tough defense.

The half time score was 48-45 as Houston made a miraculous shot at the buzzer from just inside the half court line. The play had to be reviewed as their was a lock malfunction but the review confirmed the score.

Last night the Sooners got very good play from all six primary players last night. Five Sooners scored in double figures as Godwin led the way with 17 points (7 rebounds), Soares had 16 points, Darthard had 15 points (5 threes). Moore had 14 points with 10 rebounds. McCollum had 12 (mostly late in the game) and 8 assists. Uzan ran the floor well for Oklahoma and had 0 turnovers with 6 points and 4 assists. Oweh and Northweather also played in the game and had their moments but played less than 14 minutes each. Oklahoma made 12 of 25 shots from 3-point territory to compliment their 17 for 30 shots inside the arc. Godwin may have played his best game as a Sooner as he went to the bucket hard and was 6 for 6 from the field and 5 of 6 from the free throw line.

Oklahoma outrebounded the Cougars 27 to 22 and also went to the line for 18 free throws making 15 of them. Houston only shot 11 free shots, making 9 of them. Oklahoma's defense was very good all night as many times Houston scored late in the shot clock with a hand in their face.

The Sooners need the same sort of effort on Tuesday night when they host the Cincinnati Bearcats at Lloyd Noble Center on Tuesday night at 7 PM. The Sooners are now 7-9 in conference play and sit in 10th place. They also have a 19-10 record overall. Cincy is 5-11 in conference play with a 17-12 overall record.

Great effort on Saturday night by the Sooners along with great play. Good luck to the Sooners on Tuesday night as well.

Heartbreaking... gut-wrenching... demoralizing... painful... you pick the adjective. Whatever word you choose, it was a devastatingly depressing loss. To scrape and claw and battle to finally reach the top of the mountain of a double-digit second-half deficit only to see it all for naught when a loose ball ends up in the hands of Sharp for the winning bucket was hard to take. The Sooners deserved better than that for the effort they put out. As you said, 56, Godwin played probably his best game in a Sooner uniform. He more than held his own inside. The Sooners played a stellar offensive game against probably the best defensive team in the country. But sadly, Houston was just as hot as OU. Cryer couldn't miss from the outside to start the second half, and several times UH hit a momentum-shattering shot when the Sooners were making a run. But I'm sure Houston fans were beside themselves as OU didn't fold and kept applying the pressure. It was a very entertaining game to watch, unless you were a Sooner fan, then it just became heartbreaking... gut-wrenching... demoralizing... well, you get the picture.
I may not always be right, but I'm never wrong!

If they can give the same type of effort for these last two regular season games, I believe they will win both and be in the tournament.
