The slant and the TE over the middle worked , play more of that. Throw to the open WR wherever he is dont get stuck on long throws into coverage.

RB should jump cut to the outside the middle is never open.

Don’t move into sacks .

Lots of times there were open WR and we threw to covered WR.
I was at the game with a great view - I do NOT agree with your last statement. MOST WRs were covered. They seems to run poor routes and/or the wrong ones. There were plays where two WRs with single coverage were within 5 yards of one another thus effectively giving them both double-coverage.

PS - I will agree with the first three and even don't throw to a covered WR - just not many instances of uncovered WRs
I agree the wr were mostly covered. I rewatched the game JA actually did pretty well

Good evening all. I've read this board for years but haven't posted in a long time. Thought I'd weigh-in on this. I was thinking back to the recent past and how upset I got when we were in so many games with scores like 52 -51 or the 54-48 loss in the play-off game to Georgie. After watching the game Saturday I had to cool down for awhile but when I got my wits about me I was asking which made me feel better, never knowing if we would win a high scoring game or not sure whether we would win a low scoring affair like Saturday. Somehow it felt more confident we would win on Saturday because I thought our defense would come through. I've always said successful football teams start by being good defensive teams. I had to remember that against Houston. Thoughts to consider:

1) This defense has surrendered only one touchdown in two games.
2) We're 2-0 in spite of the fact that we have lots of youngsters playing in key positions on offense and lots of injuries.
3) Bedenbaugh's o-line always starts off slow. We have this conversation pretty much every year complaining the offensive line isn't performing well enough.
4) If we went 12-0, but every game was 16 - 12 with us on top, would I/we be happy or would we complain because we didn't look good on offense?

Disclaimer...me saying these things doesn't mean I won't complain, it's what fans do. ;) Nonetheless, I think I'm happier where we are right now than I was when we were letting other teams score 35 or more points week in and week out. I'm still optimistic for the future. Coach Venables is a good coach and great leader. I think he'll get his figured out and that we'll have a good season. Really have appreciated this board through all the years and read it every day! Thanks to all my Sooner friends for this community!

Lastly.

It's a damn shame Danny Stutsman is not getting more coverage due to overall Sooner underperformance. Dude is ripping it up.

Thank you Sooner Preacher for your post. I have let this game eat on me over & over. Your post truly helped me. I try & always
try to look to the positive things in life as I have gotten older. There is noting I can do to control our beloved Sooners out come.
You sound as a truly good person, & your post helped me to put this to rest. Boomer Sooner%%!

Agreed! I said in another post that he's making a case for a Heisman nomination for himself.

We've completely flipped the script.
Right on. I have been watching Sooner football for over 7 decades and this is not an in season fix. BB never get settled on his rotation until at least the Whorn game. By then we could be staring straight into the face of a 3 game losing streak. I hope I’m wrong but 70+ years of watching says I’m not. Very disappointed with the Oline play.

I rewatched the game . Just eliminate dropped passes. Get a running game. Have the FG kicker maker 40 yard FG. Eliminate stupid penalties and we are good. JA actually did pretty well last game as far as doing his job. The injuries create opportunity for other players they just need to execute. The injuries to Oline and WR set us back a couple of games as far as gaining in in-game experience with this new offense, but at least we are on our home field for these early training games…..

I expect to win but not by much. Tulane really had KSU beat. Don’t look past Tulane . Take one game at a time.

I'll add my $0.02 after game 3.
This team has potential. Our O-line is about as patchwork as you can get.
With 2nd and 3rd teamers pressed in to service, lots of "missed plays" and lots of "lack of talent" from the line.
These guys are 2nd and 3rd teamers for a reason.
This makes Arnold lack trust that he is going to be protected.
Seth changes his plays to try to assist the line. This affects available targets; changes blocking assignments, etc.
The defense is very improved over what we saw from Grinch and TBOW.
The defense will keep us in any game until the offensive lack of production keeps them on the field too long.
We have had lots of stupid penalties this year. Illegal Formation is a stupid penalty. Personal Foul for removing your helmet is a stupid penalty. Personal Foul for retaliation is a stupid foul.
Illegal procedure, offsides, pass interference can be worked on and fixed.
Stupid fouls are fixed by taking a spot on the bench.
Though talented, we are playing 2nd team receivers, too.
If we can get our starting Center, Guard, etc and our starting receivers back, I think the offense is much improved.

One thing I do wonder about is if Arnold has "it"?
You know, the way Baker, Kyler, Jalen, etc seemed to always step up and make the play when a difference making play is needed.
Hopefully, when we get our starters back, we will find out.

I will admit that at times I've wondered about Jackson. But at the same time I remember that neither Baker nor Kyler nor Jalen started at OU 1 year removed from high school. And they didn't play behind an O-line as sketchy as what we've rolled out the first 3 weeks. And I also remember that during our 2nd half offensive malaise yesterday, when everything was going south, Jackson finally fired a bullet, on target, on a 3rd and long, and our best healthy receiver, Burks, dropped it.

Jackson definitely isn't at the level of the former Sooner QBs that you mentioned, few are, but I still think he has the talent to be pretty good, if we can let him develop and can surround him with a healthy supporting cast. When he gets to be a junior or senior, hopefully he will have the confidence to lift up his inexperienced teammates. Right now he is just as inexperienced.

And it's just my opinion, but I'm not sure if we will ever see someone else with as much confidence and swagger as Baker had. That would be a high bar to expect.

Baker was excellent in college, better now with more experience…..

But Baker made mistakes in college. For example that game against ISU Baker’s indecision on whether to hand off or pull the all out of the RB led to a fumble which led to ISU winning that game. Last season Balker’s last pass was an Interception that ended the game in a loss. So even the great ones make mistakes…..

The point is dont expect perfection from JA we have never had perfection even with great QB.

JA is learning OTJ, so there will be a few mistakes. I had not seen him miss on passes other than the night game against Houston he missed on some long passes. I think the night game affected his accuracy it did affect the guys fielding kicks….

But Tennessee is a night game…. Hoe Sooners practice at night/// :BV: :eyes: :ou:

Something else that negatively affects any quarterback’s mental health is blown protection assignments by the o-line. Those will live in JA’s head for a while
