Regional Semi-Finals Preview

Post by AustinTXSooner »

On 3/30, Arizona and West Virginia have a "play-in" meet. The winner will join the other three teams for the semi-finals. So I've included both of their numbers. The top two finishers go on to the finals, where they would expect to see #8 Minnesota and #9 California.

All Around
RankTeamNQSAVGHigh
1Oklahoma198.140197.827198.475
16Arizona St196.905196.653197.800
18Arkansas196.820196.452197.200
31West Virginia196.315195.927196.650
32Arizona196.300195.882196.850
Our average score is above anybody's high score. The chances of us not finishing first is pretty slim. Not finishing in the top 2 would be a catastrophic failure. The play-in match between West Virginia and Arizona should be close. As well as the competition between Arizona St and Arkansas for the second spot in the finals.

Vault
RankTeamNQSAVGHigh
4Oklahoma49.45049.37549.550
11Arizona St49.27549.20049.350
14Arkansas49.23549.17749.500
41West Virginia49.00548.93049.125
45Arizona48.96548.89149.075
Our lowest NQS contributing score is 49.375. And 5 of our 6 NQS contributing scores are in the last 6 meets. So we're looking pretty good on vault.
Arizona St has been remarkably consistent the last 7 meets. All but one score has been between 49.250 and 49.350. Those must be the NQS contributing scores (I'm not going to take the time to figure out how many are home meets).
Arkansas has a really nice high score, so they are a contender here. They've been generally improving all season. Their high score was two meets ago. Their highest score outside of that meet is 49.300.

Bars
RankTeamNQSAVGHigh
1Oklahoma49.58049.54049.825
18Arizona St49.27049.19049.525
20Arkansas49.22548.94349.550
33Arizona49.09548.79849.200
38West Virginia49.05548.78949.200
Our lowest NQS contributing score is 49.500. 4 of our last 6 meets are contributing scores. We've been really good on bars all season. Our worst score all year is 49.400.
Here again, Arizona St has been remarkably consistent the last 7 meets. Their 3rd meet of the year was really bad, so it skews their average. Their last 5 meets have to be 5 of their 6 NQS qualifying scores. So they are peeking.
Arkansas has been pretty inconsistent all year. Their high score was the 2nd meet of the year. They've had 2 really bad scores, the 1st and 7th meets of the year (out of 11). They could surprise on this event, but the odds aren't with them.

Beam
RankTeamNQSAVGHigh
3Oklahoma49.58049.40649.700
16Arkansas49.27549.12049.475

25Arizona49.18049.04149.275
36West Virginia49.06048.89149.275
We've had our challenges on the beam throughout the season, but 9 of our last 10 meets have been pretty consistent. However, our scores are not trending up, they've been slightly trending down. If we can throw up a 49.500, we'll be golden. We haven't reached that the last 2 meets, but I feel like the beam team will be motivated to improve.
Arkansas has a similar issue. They've been trending down their last 5 meets. Their high score was the 3rd meet. Since then, 49.325 is their highest score and that was 6 meets ago.
Arizona St has it's highest 6 scores in the last 6 meets. They could be the ones to watch here. They could easily put up a 49.400+.

27Arizona49.26549.15249.425
37Arizona St49.19049.14049.525
We've only had one meet below a 49.425, and that was the 2nd meet. I would expect a score between 49.4250 and 49.600.
Easily West Virginia's best event. The last 4 meets have either been 49.300 or 49.3250. I wouldn't be shocked if they put up a 49.400, but anything above that, I would be shocked.
Arkansas has only scored above 49.375 once and that was early February, 8 meets ago. 4 meets ago, they had a really poor score: 48.750. I'd be surprised if they put up anything higher than a 49.350.
Arizona was trending up the first 8 meets, but has been trending down the last 3. Anything above a 49.300 would be outstanding for them.
Except for 3 meets near the middle of the season, Arizona St has been relatively poor on the floor. They have a high score of 49.525, but they are much more likely to put up something in the 49.100 range.

I expect us to take the meet and each event.

Is this meet going to be on tv? I see no indication on the SoonerSports website or the tv schedule.

Surely it’s ESPN+ or Bally?

So far I don't see any specifics listed. The regional page (Normal Regional) suggests that it will be live streamed, but it doesn't say by who.

Here is the staff writers preview about the Regional Gymnastics event this afternoon at 1 PM and tonight at 7 PM. OU's Gymnasts compete at 7 PM.

https://soonersports.com/news/2022/3/30 ... orman.aspx

Last night Arizona defeated West Virginia in the 'playoff' spot for a berth tonight in the 7 PM grouping.

1 PM Grouping: California, Minnesota, Utah State and Boise State

7 PM Grouping: Oklahoma, Arizona State, Arkansas and Arizona

The two top teams from each grouping will compete in the Regional Finals on Saturday night at 5 PM.

It looks like the action is available on ESPN+.

The Oklahoma Women's Gymnastics Team performed very well last in the Regional Semi's and won their group with a score of 198.175 for a victory over Arkansas w 196.975, Arizona w 196.800 and Arizona State w 196.600. OU and Arkansas move to the final on Saturday night @ 5 PM. California and Minnesota will join OU and Arkansas in the finals.

Here is the post-event article by staff writers.

https://soonersports.com/news/2022/3/31 ... final.aspx

As a fan in the audience, the Sooners performed very well last night. I thought Jordan Bowers performed very well as she won or tied for the lead in all three of her events last night.

OU TEAM HIGHS
Event Gymnast Score
Vault Jordan Bowers, Danae Fletcher 9.95
Bars Jordan Bowers 9.975
Beam Davis, Dunn, LeVasseur, Trautman 9.9
Floor Jordan Bowers 9.95

TEAM SCORES
....Vault...Bars....Beam...Floor
OU 49.550 49.625 49.475 49.525
ASU 48.800 49.150 49.150 49.500
ARK 49.075 49.450 49.075 49.375
AZ 48.925 49.250 49.125 49.500

The one thing that was a downer last night was the crowd for the event. There were probably as many fans from the other teams involved and their fans as there were for the home town Sooners. Sooner fans need to step up on Saturday and at least fill the bottom bowl of LNC for the Regional Finals. The seats are for as little as $10 a seat I think. The Women's team is extremely good, Coach KJ Kindler is certainly as good as a coach can get. The Women's Gymnasts deserve the support of OU fans. I hope more fans show up at 5 PM on Saturday.

The ladies did great last night - they were strong in each event. It was almost a killer night except for a couple of balance checks for the last 2 performers on Beam. I think they still had the highest score across all the regionals. I feel like the Sooners best night is still out there for them.

On a side note, I checked in on the Seattle regional - thru 2 rotations, all four teams were within .300 of each other and the 2 seeds (Utah and Oregon state) were 3rd and 4th. After 3 rotations, it was even closer - all within .150 with the seeds again trailing. Utah busted a huge score on beam (at least 4 x 9.950 and maybe 5 - was getting sleepy) and won, but OSU was eliminated (Stanford finished 2nd). First time I remember staying up late for gymnastics…

I imagine their attendance for the regional was probably 8000 or more. Is that correct?

On each event yesterday, we had 4 individual scores of 9.90+

9.975: Bowers-Bars (2 of the 4 judges must have given her a 10)
9.950: Bowers-Vault/Floor, Fletcher-Vault, Davis-Bars
9.925: Smith-Bars/Floor
9.900: Davis-Beam, Dunn-Beam, Johnson-Floor, LeVasseur-Beam, Sievers-Bars/Floor, Stern-Vault, Trautman-Vault/Beam

Now to the Regional finals...
Minnesota won the other semi-final with a score of 197.825. They broke 198 once this year, a 198.025 at home against Iowa.
California had a 197.375. California has not broken 198 this year. Their highest score this season is 197.900 at home against Iowa. Yes I had to double check that to make sure it was correct. Weird coincidence. Something about Iowa brings out the best in others.
Arkansas' highest score this year is a 197.200

On individual events:
Minnesota put up a 49.525 on Vault yesterday to come real close to our 49.550. Minnesota also beat us on floor with a 49.550 compared to our 49.525. California also had a 49.525.
Cal had a really poor vault rotation yesterday, 48.950. In fact, vault is the only event that anyone in our regional didn't break 49. And that was 4 of the 8 teams (Cal, Arizona, Arizona St, and Boise St)

I think if we break 198 again (which we should). We win.
