Sooner VB travels to Austin for Thur-Fri Matches against Texas

Post by OUBeliever56A »

The Sooner VB team travels to Austin today to play against the Longhorns in a Thurs-Fri set of matches at 7 PM both nights. Both matches will be on the Longhorn Network only. But an alternative to that is using the Live Stats feed that you can select from the Texas Longhorn schedule page on their website.

The staff preview article is provided below for your read.

The matches will be a stiff test for the Sooners as Texas is one of the best teams in the country with a 18-1 record overall and a 9-1 record in the Big 12 having only lost to Baylor last weekend as the two teams split their two matches.

From looking at the Longhorns stats they have very strong players at the net. They have 5 players that have over a 90 successful kills and they all five have over a 0.281 kill %. Those same 5 players have over 33 blocks at the net on defense and 320 total blocks for the season. Between kills and service aces the Longhorns earn an average over 20.5 points a set. The Longhorns have a very high team average of 0.327 for kill %.

The Sooners will be challenged on every point at the net. The play of the front line for the Sooners will have to be excellent for the Sooners to stay in each set. The Sooners have 3 players with over 140 successful kills (Wilson, Davison and Anderson) and the Sooners have 7 players with over 29 blocks at the net and 255 total blocks for the season. With kills and service aces the Sooners earn just under 17 points a set. The Sooners have a team % of 0.193%.

The game will be decided at the net with the OU defense trying to slow down the Longhorn attack. I think the Sooner offense lead by Dunn will need to be varied and effective to keep pace with Texas as well. There may be lot of pressure put on the defenders (Kemohah, Harty and Anthony) for the Sooners to handle the attack by the Longhorns.

Good luck to the Sooner VB'ers in their version of the Red River Rivalry.

Here is the staff article for the Thursday night OU @ Texas Volleyball Match.

https://soonersports.com/news/2021/11/1 ... ustin.aspx

I did not watch the match because I was at the OU Softball game last night. I do not have the 'Longhorn Network" on my cable package so I could not have watched the match anyway. A friend and I did keep up with the match via 'Live Stats' on his phone.

The first set proved to be quite a contest. Texas was never able to break out to more than a four point lead in the set. OU did rally to tie the score at 5-5 on a kill by Wilson. Once again the Sooners got close at 12-11 on a kill by Anderson.

After trailing 17-13 the Sooners rallied one more time to trail by two points 22-20 on a service ace by Curtis-LittleJim. After a Texas time-out the Longhorns made an error to make the score 22-21. An attack kill for Texas and an error by OU raised the score to 24-21. Davison earned a point on a kill for the Sooners to make the score 24-22. A kill by Texas won the match at 25-22.

In the first set OU earned 8 attack points against 15 for Texas. OU had 2 service aces and 2 service errors. Texas totalled 3 aces against 7 errors. Despite having 0 blocks the Sooners made the first set a true contest. Texas outhit the Sooners with a .417 % to .296 % for OU.

In the second set Texas ran out to a 10-2 lead behind a service run by Petersen of Texas. The eight point Texas lead was reduced to 5 a couple times at 14-9 and 16-11. By the end of the set the Longhorn lead grew to 9 as they won 25-14.

The attack numbers told the story of the set. Texas had 11 kills and 9 errors for a net of 9 points. OU had 11 kills but also had 11 errors for a net of 0. Texas added 5 blocks to 2 for the Sooners to win going away.

The third set started out roughly for the Sooners as Texas ran the lead to 9-2 on service ace by Texas. The Sooners rallied to trail by 3 at 11-8 behind two consecutive service aces by Curtis-LittleJim. But four straight points by Texas made the 15-8 and the Sooners never got closer than 5 points the rest of the way. Texas won the third set 25-13.

The net game again was the story. OU had a net of 2 kill points and 0 blocks. Texas had a net of 14 kill points and 3 blocks.

Texas is a very strong team at the net. OU's strength is probably their ability to block at the net. For OU to only have 2 blocks in the match indicates how well Texas attacks the net on offense.

The two teams meet tonight again at 7 PM in Austin. The Sooners hopefully can rise up and play their very best tonight and meet Texas above the net to surprise the Longhorns and win a set or two or maybe 3.

Good Luck to the team! Boomer Sooner!

Here is the staff article about the Sooners VB match on Friday night with OU @ Texas.

https://soonersports.com/news/2021/11/1 ... horns.aspx

The Set scores in the match were 25-8 for Texas, 25-21 for Texas and 25-14 for Texas for a 3-0 sweep for the Texas match win.

It looks like the Sooners played well in the second set but still was unable to defeat the Longhorns in a tough set.

The OU Volleyball team returns to McCasland Field House in 2 weeks on Tuesday (23rd) and Wednesday (24th) evenings to play Baylor @ 5 PM and 4 PM respectively.
