Post by OUBeliever56A »

The 3-0 Oklahoma Sooner Volleyball team travels to Nashville to play three matches against three tough teams this weekend. Only one game is streamed (Sunday at 7 PM against Lipscomb). The other two will have a 'Live Stats' feed. (Ball State - Friday @ 2PM and Mississippi State Saturday @ 11 AM)

Here is the staff writers preview article about the weekend Lipscomb LUV tourney.

As Coach Gray-Walton commented, all three teams could be tourney teams this season. They competition is pretty high this weekend. We will perhaps see how good the young 2022 Sooner Volleyball squad can be.

Good luck to the Sooners!

Ball State defeats the Sooners on Friday in Nashville. Ball State was 30-4 in 2021 and was a NCAA Tourney Team who won in the 1st round. Here is the staff writers article about the match.

https://soonersports.com/news/2022/9/2/ ... state.aspx

Despite the set score of 3-1, the Sooners were in the match most of the day. The set scores were 17-25, 27-29, 25-20, 25-16.

In set one, the Sooners lead 13-9 but Ball State went on a 6 point run to take the lead 15-13 and controlled the game the rest of the way. the six point run included 4 kills and 2 service aces by Ball State.

In set two, the Sooners trailed 17-10. OU substituted Taylor Preston (FR) into the game which produced a rally to close the score to 23-19. At that point, the Sooners rallied behind Alexis Shelton who had four straight kills to take a 25-24 lead with the game point in hand. After a Bal State kill, Shelton another kill to make the score 26-25 Sooners. Another Ball State kill tied the score again. A Megan Wilson (SO) kill tied the score at 27-27 before Ball State got two kills from Mitchem to end the game 29-27.

Set 3 started with the two teams trading points up until the 12-12 point in the game. With Wilson serving, the Sooners won 5 straight points on 2 kills a service ace by Wilson and two Ball State errors. The Sooners maintained at least a 3 point lead the rest of the way to win 25-20.

In set 4, Ball State ran out to a 19-8 lead to take control of the set. But a block by Morgan Perkins (FR and Shelton rallied the Sooners as they closed to 19-14 behind three kills and two errors by Ball State. Ball State closed strong winning 6 of 8 points to finish with a 25-16 win.

The Sooners were led by Alexis Shelton who had 20 points in the match. Shelton recorded 18 kills with 4 errors (.333%) and 4 blocks. Megan Wilson recorded 16 points with 13 kills and 6 errors (.194%), 2 service aces and 2 blocks. Taylor Preston added 11 points with 11 kills, 1 error (.312%). The MB position was strong as Adria Oliver and Morgan Perkins added 7.0 and 6.5 points on 9 kills, 1 solo block and 7 blocks.

The service game comparison for the two teams was interesting. OU had 2 aces with 9 service errors. Ball State had 8 service aces with with 7 errors. Ball State won 17 points on the initial serve strike of the volleyball compared to OU's 9. On the reception of the serve, the Sooners made 8 errors compared to 2 for Ball State. Ball State outscored the Sooners 25 - 11 simply by hitting the serves to the other team. That is telling. OU had trouble with Ball State's Wielonski's service game as Ball State scored well with her serving during the match.

OU played 10 players in the match.

OH - Wilson, Davison, Shelton, Preston
MB - Oliver, Perkins
Setter - Dunn
Libero - Kemohah
DS - Serve - Kaminski, Talpash
Good luck to the Sooner in their 11 o'clock match against Mississippi State. MSU is 3-0 in 2022 winning 9 out of 9 games. MSU was 25-6 in 2021 and made the NCAA Tourney. MSU defeated Oklahoma 3-1 on Sept 10th in the Georgia Tech Tourney in 2021.

I had to use the Ball State selection to 'track' the match yesterday. It looked like OU's link was tied to the Miss State match on Saturday. Ugh!

The Oklahoma Sooners Volleyball Team split a pair of matches on Saturday in Nashville as they were defeated by Mississippi State 3 sets to 2 in a very tough match and then rallied to defeat Lipscomb 3 sets to 1 to finish the weekend with a win. The Sooners are now 4-2 on the season. Here is the two match staff writers article about Saturday's play.

https://soonersports.com/news/2022/9/4/ ... ville.aspx

In the 11 AM match against Mississippi State, the Sooners starters in each of the 5 sets were:

Wilson OH, Preston OH, Shelton OH, Dunn Setter, Oliver MB, Perkins, MB, Kemohah, Libero
Talpash and Kaminski rotated into the game as defensive/serve subs in the first four sets. In the fifth set, Kaminski and Davison were defensive/serve subs.
The Sooners played very well in the first two sets as they won the sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-21.

In the first set the scoring was well divided as Wilson, Oliver and Preston all recorded 4 kills with Perkins adding 3 and Shelton 3. The Sooners eliminated errors well in the first set as they only had 6, with 4 kill errors and one error apiece on serve and blocks. The Sooners scored 20 game points on kills and blocks in the game. The Sooner kill% of .467 in the first set was their highest of the season so far.

The second set , Megan Wilson and Taylor Preston starred as they had 7 and 6 kills respectively with 0 errors. Wilson also added 4 service aces in the game. Once again the Sooners eliminated errors as they only had 6 with 3 kill errors, 1 service error and 2 block errors. The Sooner kill% was .351% which is also very strong.

Finding themselves up 2 sets to 0 against Mississippi State had to be a very good feeling for the Sooners.

The next two sets were very dramatic sets as the Bulldogs of Mississippi State battled back to win both sets in overtime play 27-25.

In set 3, after a 4-4 tie, the Sooners ran out to a 3 or 4 point lead most of the set until MSU rallied to tie the score at 21-21 and took a 2 point lead at 23-21. the Sooners rallied to tie the score at 24-24 but MSU showed their toughness as they won 3 of the next 4 points to win quickly 27-25. The Sooners still played pretty well in the set but their errors did bump up to 9 with 4 service errors, 3 service errors and 2 receive errors. The Sooner kill% was their third in a row of .310% or better as they were led by Wilson, Shelton and Preston.

In set 4, MSU started quickly as they lead 5-1 before the Sooners rallied to tie the set at 6-6. The Sooners briefly lead 13-11 before MSU took a 21-16 lead. But the Sooners showing some resiliency, battled back to tie the score at 24-24. But once again, Mississippi State won three of the next four points to win the set 27-25. The Sooners' errors reached 10 in the fourth set with 6 kill errors, 1 service error, 2 receive error and one setting error. Perkins led the way for the Sooners with 4 kills and 1 solo block.

In set 5, the Bulldogs ran out to a quick 7-0 lead behind 5 winning points by MSU and 2 Sooner errors. After the Sooners won 3 of the next 4 points, the Bulldogs once again ran off 7 straight points to win the 5th set 15-3.

It must have been a very satisfying comeback for Mississippi State to be down 0-2 in sets and manage to sweep the last three sets with two tough wins in sets 3 and 4. Conversely, it must have been very disappointing for the Sooners. But they showed great improvement over 2021 when the Bulldogs defeated the Sooners 3 sets to 1 with the Sooners dropping three sets by the scores of 18-25, 16-25 and 14-25. the Sooners set win was a 27-25 win in overtime. The Sooners are very young playing 4 freshman, 3 sophomores and 2/3 seniors. This match will benefit them later in the season as they get more experience and confidence.

In the 7 PM Match against Lipscomb on Saturday evening, the Sooners returned to the win column with a 4 set victory over host Lipscomb 25-17, 25-11, 17-25 and 25-20.

The Sooners starters were the same lineup in the first three sets:

OH: Wilson, Shelton, Preston - MB: Oliver, Perkins - Setter: Dunn and Libero: Kemohah
Defensive Subs/Server Subs/OH Subs: Talpash, Kaminski, Davison
In Set #1, the Sooners started slowly as they were down 5-1 after the first six points. After the Sooners tied the score at 6-6 and 7-7, the Sooners steadily increased their lead to win the set 25-17. The Sooners had 7 errors in the set with 1 kill error, 4 service errors, 1 receive error and 1 block error. Shelton was on fire in the set with 8 kills and a shared block for 8.5 points. Wilson and Talpash had service aces. In Set #1 the Sooners set a new kill% high with a .559% mark.

In Set #2, the Sooners eliminated the early slow start and ran out to a 7-3 lead, then a 12-4 lead, then 20-7 lead before winning 25-11. Wilson lead the way with 7 kills as the Sooners held their errors down to 4. There were 3 kill errors and 1 service error. The Sooners also had 4 service aces (Wilson, Kemohah, Preston and Kaminski). The Sooner kill% was a lofty .423% in Set #2.

In Set #3, something changed. The Sooners ballooned to have 11 errors with 6 kill errors, 2 service errors and 3 receive errors. The kill% for the Sooners dropped to 0.62% in the set. That opened the door for Lipscomb and they ran through the door quickly. Lipscomb ran out to a 5-1 lead. After a Wilson kill to make it 5-2, the Sooners ran off six straight points on Kemohah's service rotation to lead 8-5. The last Sooner lead was at 10-8 before Lipscomb rallied to win going away 25-17.

In the 4th set there were some lineup changes:

OH: Wilson, Davison, Shelton - MB: Oliver, Carrington - Setter: Dunn - Libero: Kemohah
Defensive Subs/Serve Subs/Setter Subs: Talpash, Kaminski and Chamberlain
After the set reached a 7-7 tie, the Sooners ran out to a controlling lead which shrunk to 20-18. But the Sooners quickly won the next three points to lead 23-18 and finish the match with a 25-20 win. Davison, Wilson and Shelton lead the way with 10 kills as Davison had 4. The Sooners had a low kill% of .194% but still won the set. The Sooners had 10 errors with 4 kill errors, 4 service errors and 2 receive errors. Kaminski had the lone service ace. Lipscomb had 16 errors in the set.

The weekend was not perhaps what the Sooners and Coach Gray-Walton wished for but they played Mississippi State very close and won over Lipscomb to raise their record to 4-2 on the season. They have a 15-8 set record thru six matches.

The Sooner VB'ers are off to the west coast next weekend with three matches against Santa Clara, Tulane and Fresno State.
