The Sooner Women's golf team was led by Mikhaela Fortuna (SR) yesterday who shot even par on the day. She was 4 under par for much of her round but ended with 4 bogeys in her last six holes (including 2 par 5s). Fortuna was playing as the 6th spot for the Sooners. To get a 72 out of her was a big boost.

As a team the Sooner shot 384 which places them in 7th out of 8 teams.

Here is the staff writers article about Friday's play.

For the Sooners:

The #1 spot was filled by Nina Lang (JR) who shot a 74. A double bogey on #11 kept her from shooting even par.
The #2 spot was filled by Raychel Nelke (FR) shot a 78. Her double bogey on #16 hurt her down the stretch.
The #3 spot was filled by Maria Fernanda Martinez (R-SR) shot an 81. She was only 3 over on 15 holes. But the 3 double bogeys on the other three really impacted her score.
The #4 spot was filled by Savana Barber (FR) who shot an 84. She was one under on 9 of the 18 holes. But 3 'other' scores added 7 shots over par for her.
The #5 spot was filled by Megan Winans (SO) who shot 79. She was 2 over par on 16 of the holes. But a double and a triple bogey added 5 shots over par on the other two.
If the Sooners can eliminate the holes that are over a bogey today, they should improve as a team.

The Sooners have two more rounds during the weekend.

Keep the ball in play, ladies!

Saturday's round at the Carmel Cup for the Oklahoma Sooners was a positive step forward for the team. They shot a Team score of 372 or 12 over par. They had 4 team members shot +3 (75) better. As a team they still are in 7th out of 8 teams but could finish one spot better with a strong round on Sunday. Here is the staff writers article about Saturday's final.

https://soonersports.com/news/2022/9/3/ ... round.aspx

The improved play by Megan Winans and Maria Fernanda Martinez to shoot 73 on the day was a big key for the Sooners as the duo improved their scores by 14 stokes. Kudos to those two players. Mikhaela Fortuna shot her second strong round by shooting 74 to follow up her even par round of 72 on Friday. She is in 12th overall individually in the tournament. The fourth Sooner to shot a strong round on Saturday was Savana Barber who shot 75 or 3 over. She improved her score by 9 shots over Friday. That is a very good bounce back for the Freshman in her first tournament. The fifth and counting score of the day was provided by Nina Lang who shot a 77 or 5 over par on the day that followed her 74 on Friday. she is in the Top 25 individually in the tourney. Raychel Nelke (another FR) shot her second straight 78 or 6 over on Saturday.

As a team, the Sooners did a much better job as the eliminated the 'other' scores with only 3 holes played in double bogeys compared to 10 'other' scores on Friday.

Hit it straight and roll the putts today, ladies!

Here is the staff writers article from the Sunday round at Pebble Beach Links.

https://soonersports.com/news/2022/9/4/ ... l-cup.aspx

- Nina Lang, listed as the #1 player for OU, shot her second 74 of the tourney on Sunday. Her total of 225 (9-over par) for the three day tourney led the Sooners as she finished T24th in the individual play. Lang tallied 4 birdies and only 1 'other' score in the 3 rounds.

- Mikhaela Fortuna, listed as the #6 player for OU, probably had the best tourney of the six OU players. Her Sunday round was not her best but she should some resolve as she was 8-over thru 11 holes on Sunday but finished with 7 straight pars to shot 80 on the day. Her three day total of 226 (10-over par) was important to the Sooners as she notched the #1 score on Friday, #3 score on Saturday and #5 score on Sunday for the Sooners. She totaled 6 birdies and one 'other' score in the three days.

- Maria Fernanda Martinez, listed as the #3 plyer for OU, logged her second strong score of the tourney on Sunday with a 74. Martinez was 1-under after a birdie on #15 but boogied the final three holes to shot 74. Her 228 (12-over par) for the three days was due to a poor first round on Friday when she shot 81. She totaled 5 birdies and four 'other' scores with 3 of those coming on Friday. Fernandez was the best player for OU the final two days.

- Megan Winans, listed as the #5 player for OU, shot her second 79 for the tourney on Sunday. Her 73 on Saturday was her highlight of the tourney. Her 231 (15-over par) for three days relied on her 73 to help her total. She had 5 birdies and 6 'other' scores in the tourney. 5 of her 'others' come on 2 holes on the course.

- Savanna Barber, listed as the #4 player for OU, shot her second consecutive 75 on Sunday. Her two 75's offset her 84 on Day 1. She totalled 6 birdies and 4 'others' on the weekend. Her final two rounds included 5 birdies and only 1 'other' to finish fairly strong in her last two rounds. In her first tourney as a freshman, she recovered well in her final two rounds.

- Raychel Nelke, listed as the #2 player for OU. did not play her best on Sunday. The freshman from Pocola, OK managed her game fairly well on Friday and Saturday with one birdie and one 'other' as she shot two 78's. On Sunday the 4 'others' were tough to overcome. To be the #2 player, she is obviously talented. She will have the chance to build some confidence when the Sooners play at 'home' at Belmar GC in Norman later this month.

It is 3 weeks until the Sooners walk to the 1st tee at Belmar GC. Her is to the best practice to build confidence an low scores at Belmar!
