The Oklahoma Sooners ran their pre-season record to 8-2 on Thursday night as they swept Abilene Christian in Abilene in 3 sets; 25-16, 25-18 and 25-17.
The Oklahoma Sooner starters were;
Wilson led the Sooners with 18.0 points on 14 Kills, 1 Service Ace and 1 solo block and 4 other blocks with 7 digs.
Shelton was 2nd in points with 11/5 points on 11 Kills, and 1 block.
Perkins playing strong in the center of the net added 10.0 points with 7 Kills and 6 blocks.
Preston added 8 points on 8 Kills with 7 digs.
Carrington complimented Preston in the MB with 6.5 points on 5 Kills and 3 blocks with 1 dig.
Chamberlain tallied 3 points on 1 Service Ace and 4 blocks with 7 digs and 39 assists.
Kemohah earned her single point on 1 Service Ace with 17 digs and 4 assists.
Kaminski had the final point on 1 Service Ace and 7 digs of her own.
Talpash had 1 very nice dig of her own but scored no points.
I would not say the the Sooners played their best on Thursday night but they did play well. As each set played out the Sooners took control after about 25 points or so and ran out to 9, 7 and 8 point wins. Their Hitting % was .340 on the evening against the shorter ACU squad.
The Sooner return to McCasland Field House on Friday as they play two matches. In the First match of the day, Oklahoma faces Texas Southern (0-8) at 1 PM. At 7 PM, Oklahoma plays Nevada (5-4). On Saturday at 11 AM, Nevada and Texas Southern play at McCasland Field House.
It will be interesting to see if Adria Oliver or Peyton Dunn can play this Friday. For the last four matches, Kelsey Carrington has played for Oliver as she was wearing a boot earlier in the weekend but tonight she was boot-free and moving fairly well on the sidelines. Payton Chamberlain has played for Peyton Dunn in the last four matches also. Dunn shows no outward signs of an injury while on the sidelines but she is not dressed to play. After Friday's play the Sooners jump from the fire into a red-hot frying pan as they open Big 12 play against Texas in Austin on September at 7 PM. If the plan is to play Dunn and Oliver against Texas, they should probably see action on Friday as a tune-up. I will say that Carrington and Chamberlain has played well as substitutes.
The Sooners have a good shot at closing out the pre-Big 12 season with a 10-2 season by sweeping Friday's matches. That would be the best start for the Sooners Volleyball Squad since 2013 when the Sooners started 12-2 before Big 12 play.
Good luck on Friday, I hope McCasland is rocking and full of fans to watch the young and exciting Sooners.
