Sooner M&W Cross Country Squads in Arkansas on Friday

Post by OUBeliever56A »

Here is a posting about the Sooner M&W Cross Country Squads participating in the Chili Pepper XC Festival in Fayetteville, AK
- - - -

OU XC heads out to good ole Fayetteville, Arkansas on September 30th!

Here is the course description:
"The Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival is held on the University of Arkansas cross country course in Fayetteville. The course is a combination of grass, cinder and uneven terrain. SEC and NCAA Championships have been settled here! Coach Bucknam (Arkansas' HC) describes it as the Superbowl of Cross Country!"

This is one of the largest meets in Cross Country as it is a 2 day event for College (Friday), High School and Junior High (Saturday).

There is a ton of teams going to be at this meet, you can see the list here

Notable Team Attendees (Men):
Arkansas (#16 in NCAA)
Oklahoma City (#7 in NAIA)
Tulsa (#2 in Midwest Region)
Kansas State (#12 in Midwest Region)

Notable Team Attendees (Women):
Arkansas (#13 in NCAA)
Oklahoma City (#22 in NAIA)
Tulsa (#7 in Midwest Region)
Kansas State (#8 in Midwest Region)

The Course Map for the Men's 8k can be found here

The Course Map for the Women's 5k can be found here

Here's the measuring stick meet. This meet will probably give us the idea of how we'll fall in the Big 12 Championship Meet and if we're able to get runners to Nationals.

Expect OU to probably not finish top 5 in either men or women, but if they did... it would be absolutely huge for this program moving forward!

The Oklahoma Sooners held their own very well in the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville on Friday. The Women's Squad did especially well as they finished 4th on the day in the 5K event. the Men's Squad finished 21st in their 8 K event. Here is the staff writers article about the meet.

The Women ran in a 'cluster' on Friday as their faster runner was only 21.2 seconds in front of the 5th fastest. Those five runners finished from 24th to 49th.

Erin O'Brien (FR) ran 17:22.9 on the day finished in 24th - Her 5K time was more than 30 seconds faster than in the first fall meet this year.
Gabi Barrera (SOPH) ran 17:29.5 finished in 30th - Her 5K time was more than 30 seconds faster than in the first fall meet this year.
Sierra Williams (JR) ran 17:29.7 finished in 31st - Her 5K time was more than 40 seconds faster than in the first fall meet this year.
Jordyn Kaplan (GR) ran 17:43.6 finished in 47th - Her 5K time was more than 25 seconds faster than in the first fall meet this year.
Madeline Medina (SR) ran 17:44.1 finished in 49th - Her 5K time was more than 40 seconds faster than in the first fall meet this year.
Tarryn Lowery (FR) ran 18:24.1 finished in 101st - Her 5K time was more than 70 seconds faster than in the first fall meet this year.
I do not know anything about the terrain for the two events, but the improvement in the times over about month is very surprising to me. The top four women have traded the top 4 spots for the Sooners in the three meets this fall. O'Brien has been 1st twice, with Kaplan being first in the other event. Barrera and Williams are just behind the other two with Medina adding a solid 5th runner so far.

Sooners_B12C said in his primer is OU could finish in the Top 5, it would be huge. Finishing 4th must be pretty huge then for the Women's Squad!

The Men's Squad were led by;

Colin Caso (SOPH) who ran 24:15.1 for a 14th place finish. It is Caso's 3rd strong outing this fall.
Fernando Morales (JR) ran 25.09.5 in the Sooner 2nd spot and an 86th place finish. Morales has been top 4 for the Sooners in all 3 meets.
Jordan Gledhill (SR) ran 25:12.3 for a 91st place finish and he has ran in all 3 meets for the Sooners this fall.
Thomas Knepshield (SR) ran 25:59.5 for a 169th place finish as he ran in his 3rd meet also.
Loren Seger (FR) ran 26:46.6 for a 243rd place finish as he ran in his 3rd meet also.
I wonder why only the Men's Team only had 5 runners in the event. One of their lead runners, Antonio Florcruz (SOPH) did not run Friday which would have helped. Considering that, the Sooner Men's 21st place finish may not be all that bad as all five times had to count.

The next meet for the Sooners Cross Country is Weis-Crockett Invitational in Stillwater, OK on October 15th.
