Sooner Women's Soccer - Two Big 12 Matches this Week in Norman

The surging Oklahoma Sooner Women's Soccer Team host two Big 12 Teams this week at John Crain Field on Thursday and Sunday. On Thursday the Sooners host Iowa State in a 7 PM match. Iowa State is 0-1-1 in the Big 12 and 3-4-3 on the season. On Sunday the Sooners host Texas Tech at 1 PM. Texas Tech is also 0-1-1 in the Big 12 and 4-3-4 on the season. The Sooners are currently 1-0 in the Big 12 and 6-2-2 on the season with 7 straight wins and/or ties after a 0-2-1 start.

Here is the staff writers article about this week's challenges for the Sooners.

The Sooner Women Soccer team has been playing very well during their current streak. They have been playing an aggressive style of play with strong play in mid-field and on the offensive end while receiving strong play on defense and in the goal. The Sooners have outscored their opponents 18-5 over their last 7 matches.

Good luck to the Sooners on Thursday night and Sunday afternoon at John Crain Field.

Last night at John Crain Field the Iowa State Cyclones led the Oklahoma Sooners Women's Soccer squad 1-0 with about 7 minutes to play. It looked like the Sooner 5-game winning streak (7 without a loss) might come to an end, But out on the right side of the Iowa State goal, Alexis Washington possessed the ball with two Cyclone defenders marking her. Washington made two moves, shuffled the ball and then burst between to the two defenders and advanced directly towards the right corner post of the goal. As she drew another Iowa State defender towards her and the GK moved to the post to defend a shot, Washington made a nice crossing pass across the goal to her left that found Morganne Eikelbarner. Eikelbarner handled the ball and got off a shot low and to the left side of the goal that got by the diving Cyclone GK for the tying goal. Big Moment and two big plays by two freshman. The tying goal did two things, It energized the Sooners and it also deflated the Cyclones. The announcers during the game had commented that Iowa State had given up six or seven goals this season inside the last 10 minutes of matches that changed match outcomes.

About three minutes later, Eikelbarner, I think, was taken down just outside of the 18-yard penalty box. Leonie Weber lined up to take the free-kick for the Sooners. She deftly lofted her shot over the defensive wall in front of her, over the outstretched arm of the Cyclone GK as the ball struck the underside of the crossbar of the goal. As the ball bounced down behind the GK and out towards the players, Sheridan Michel and Bri Amos tried to get to the ball through the defenders. Michel made to the ball and 'hipped' the ball into the right side of the goal for the Sooners 2nd goal. Iowa State thought the ball might have contacted Michel's arm/hand, but the goal was ruled good.

Inside the last minute of the match, Bailey Wesco was taken down inside the penalty box by a Cyclone defender. OU selected Hali Hartman to take the penalty kick. She nailed it with a low shot to to the right side as the GK went left.

The Sooners pulled out a 3-1 win with 3 goals in 7 minutes to come from behind to win. Here is the staff writers article about the win for the Sooners.

The Sooners played without Emma Hawkins (leading goal scorer for the Sooners) last night. She was on the bench not wearing a uniform. There were no indications of an injury and she did walk on and off the field. The victory without her playing is another reason to call this win a big win.

The starters last night were:

GK - Ramey
Defenders - Kroflin RO, Michel RM, Hartman LM, Clifton LO
Mid - England L, Brown R
Forwards - Washington RO, Weber RM, Bri Amos LM, Wagoner LO

During the match the Sooners transitioned to more of a 3-3-3-1 with the RO Defender Kroflin moving forward to the Midfield and Amos forward as the point player. OU played much of the match with 3 freshman defenders and a GK.

The Sooners played 21 players in the match with 26 playing 24 minutes or more in the match. I thought that England and Washington played well moving the ball forward in the match. Eikelbarner and Michel both scored their 3rd goal of the season with Hartman scoring her first. Washington earned her 6th assist and Weber had her 3rd assist.

The lone goal against the Sooners was scored in the 32nd minute in the first half. The goal came on a long entry pass into the box where a mix of players were located. The ball come out into the left side of the goal as Ramey dove to try to stop the goal. It is the only goal given up by the Sooners in the last three matches.

The Sooner Women Soccer Squad kept things going last night with the won. They face Texas Tech on Sunday at 1 PM. Tech tied Oklahoma State 1-1 last night. That game left the Sooners as the only untied and unbeaten Big 12 Women's Soccer team.

Good luck to the Sooner ladies on Sunday!

I've only watched the first 60 minutes of the game, but Hawkins was on the sideline with her right foot in a boot. Not sure why Pak didn't play.

Also, Iowa State got a red card somewhere around the 51st minute. The Iowa St. player was not happy, but she deserved the red card. She tackled Wesco on a breakaway.

I did not see Hawkins' 'boot'. Thanks for pointing that out.

I forgot all about the red card for Iowa State. My bad. that probably did figure into the 3 goals in the last minutes of the match. I should have included that in the write-up. Thank you again.

I guess I got caught up in the three late goals and just did not mention the red card. And yes, I thought she deserved it also.

Thanks for your comments also. They are always appreciated.

We seemed to control the ball most of the 2nd half, with them down a player. We were a little unlucky not to get a goal earlier. But Iowa State was full on in defensive mode. Their only real offense was going to be a breakaway.

Washington had a nice pass across the top on the box to setup Eikelbarner for the first goal. Eikelbarner didn't get everything on that shot, but it was enough to get in.

It was nice to see Hartman get the opportunity on the penalty shot and she converted well.

The Oklahoma Sooners Women's Soccer Team hosted Texas Tech on Sunday afternoon in Big 12 play on a beautiful day to play soccer. The Sooners were looking for their 7th win in a row and their 9th match in a row without a loss. The 4-3-5 Texas Tech Red Raiders had tied previously once beaten and once tied Oklahoma State on Thursday night in Stillwater. The Red Raider trip to Oklahoma ended successfully for Tech as they defeated the Sooners 2-1 behind two 1st half goals to end the Sooners streak. Texas Tech advanced to a 5-3-5 record and a 1-1-2 record (5 points) in the Big 12. The Sooners record dropped to a 2-1-0 record (6 points) in the Big 12 and a 7-3-2 overall record.

Here is the post-match staff writers article about the match.

I was busy on Sunday afternoon early but I was able to watch the 2nd half of the match. From the lineup I see that once again Hawkins (probably an ankle issue) once again sat out of the match. Based upon the box score it looks like the Sooners lined up in a 4-3-3 alignment to start the game with Bri Amos, Washington and Weber at forwards. England, Brown and Eikelbarner were in the midfield with Michel, Hartman, Clifton and Kroflin on the defensive line. Ramey was in goal for the Sooners.

Texas Tech opened the scoring in the 15th minute of the match when they advance the ball on the outside to the left of GK Ramey. Tech made a nice centering pass into the box that was intercepted by Kelis Brown nicely. She immediately turned to clear the ball out of the penalty box. Her clearing kick unfortunately was directly to Williams of Tech at the corner of the penalty box to the left of Ramey. A quick block of the pass and a shot by Williams made it past Ramey as she advanced to the ball and just out of the reach of a Sooner defender behind Ramey for a nice goal into the far side of the goal. The clearing pass by Brown would have been great if it was 5 feet either way to waiting Sooners.

In the 27th minute of play, Texas Tech had a corner kick for the far corner of the field. The Kozarski corner kick was very nice and directly to a moving Anderson for Tech. Anderson smartly headed the ball just inside the far post past the Sooner GK for a 2-1 lead.

The Sooners attacked well in the 2nd half. They finally scored a goal in the 83rd minute of the match. The score came on a Weber centering pass from near midfield that got to the goal area. Bri Amos attacking the goal and almost made contact with the pass but as the ball moved past Amos, a Tech defender's leg made contact with the ball and it caromed into the net past the Tech GK. I am not sure if the Tech defender was trying to play the ball or she did not even see it until it her. But nevertheless, the goal was scored and credited to Amos with Weber getting an assist. The Sooners were unable to score in the remaining 6 minutes of the match as they dropped the game 2-1.

The Sooners played 11 players for 53 minutes or more in the match with 6 others players seeing action with 2 playing 38 minutes or more.

From the highlights there were two 'almost' goals by the Sooners in the 1st half. One on a free kick by Weber where her kick was around the defensive wall and just barely wide of the goal post on the right side. The second 'almost' was on a nice ball floated into the goal box by Weber that Amos was able to jump and make a play on that was headed just barely above the cross bar to go out of play.

With the loss the Sooners are still in a very good spot in the Big 12 with their 2-1-0 record with 6 points. Through Sunday's matches the Sooners are in 4th with three teams, Oklahoma State, Texas and TCU all with 7 points and 2-0-1 records. Tech and West Virginia are tied for 5th with 5 points.

In a big match on Thursday night at 7 PM, the Sooners will host Oklahoma State in a Bedlam matchup between 2 of the top 4 teams in the Big 12. On Thursday, Texas hosts Kansas State (1 point). TCU host West Virginia (5 points). Texas Tech host Iowa State (1 point). In the other match, Baylor hosts Kansas.

Thursday night's match with OSU is the only game during the next week for Oklahoma. Perhaps Hawkins can get back on the field for the game for some minutes to help the scoring effort for the Sooners. Good luck to the ladies on Thursday against the Cowgirls.
