OU Women's Soccer-Last Home Stand this week- WV rallies to win 3-2 over OU

Post by OUBeliever56A »

OU Women's Soccer-Last Home Stand this week - TCU (Wed) - WV (Fri)

The Oklahoma Women's Soccer squad plays their final home games of the season this week at John Crain Field. They host the 2nd Place Big 12 team, TCU (4-0-2), on Thursday night at 7 PM. The Sooners face West Virginia (2-1-3) at 1 PM on Sunday. Both matches are on ESPN+. Oklahoma enters the week at 2-3-1 in Big 12 play and 7-5-3 overall. The Sooners are 0-3-1 in their last four matches. Oklahoma is currently tied for 6th in the Big 12 with Kansas State with 7 points. Baylor follows with 6 points and Kansas is in 9th with 4 points. Only the top 8 teams advance to the Big 12 Tourney.

Here is the weekly rundown on the Sooners play this week against TCU and West Virginia.

With 3 matches left in the regular season, the Sooners need points (3 for a win and 1 for a tie) in the three matches. Their schedule is tough however as they play the two top teams in TCU and Texas in Austin and also West Virginia. who is above them is the standings. It is interesting that West Virginia is matched up with K-State, OU and Kansas. those three matches could determine who makes the Big 12 Tourney.

The Sooners need to play well to finish out their improved season of play during 2022. Good luck to the ladies the next three matches.

The Oklahoma Sooners Women's Soccer Team had a milestone moment last night as the young Sooners defeated the veteran and #12 Ranked TCU Horned Frogs 2-1 in a come from behind victory in the second half. It had to be, by a wide margin, the best effort of the season for the Sooners. The victory, and the 3 points that come with the win, keeps the Sooners squarely in the Big 12 Tourney hunt. The victory over the Horned Frogs was the Sooners first win against TCU since 2016 per the staff writers article which is below.

https://soonersports.com/news/2022/10/2 ... -no-12-tcu

TCU was very offensive in the first half as they challenged the Sooners defensively often. The Sooners did a pretty good job to defend TCU who often had as many offensive players on the ball as OU had defenders. The one goal scored by TCU was from the outside by Slater in the 34th minute. There were several corner kicks by TCU in the first half that were almost additional goals off of headers but none were successful.

In the second half the play was a bit more even between the two teams. Oklahoma tightened up on defense and their offense created a few more chances. the first chance came in the 60th minute when Washington carried the ball deep and made a fine pass through TCU defenders to Bri Amos. Amos left-footed a ball in the upper left hand corner of the net to score the game-tying goal. The final goal of the game came in the 81st minute on a Sooners corner kick. It was their only corner kick of the game. For the Sooners, Weber played the ball in short to Washington who made a move and then delivered the ball back to Weber. Weber then centered the ball to the far side of the goal area to Geoffrey (FR) who collected the ball and shot the ball high over the TCU goal keeper and under the crossbar for the tie-breaking goal. It was Geoffrey's first goal as a Sooner. What a great time to collect that goal for her!

Oklahoma won despite being outshot 21-10 with TCU leading in Shots on Goal 6-4. TCU had 15 corner kicks to OU's single corner. OU's goalkeeper, Short, had 5 saves in goal for the Sooners compared to 2 for TCU's GK. It was a very big win for the Sooners.

Congrats to the Sooners for their win. The win for the Sooners evens up their Big 12 record to 3-3-1 and gives them 10 points in the Big 12 standings. They play West Virginia on Sunday at John Crain Field. West Virginia is 2-1-4 in the Big 12 play with 10 points also. The two teams are currently tied for 5th in the Big 12 standings. With OU facing Texas next Wednesday and WV facing Kansas State on Wednesday, a win over WV would be huge for the Sooners. Remaining in 5th place would be very good for the Sooners.

Good luck to the Sooners on Sunday vs the Mountaineers.

Wednesday night was a 'early scary night' for the leaders in the Big 12 Soccer standings. Last night's results were as follows;

Texas and Iowa State tied 1-1 in Ames, IA
West Virginia and Oklahoma State tied 1-1 in Stillwater, OK.
Oklahoma defeated TCU 2-1 in Norman, OK.
Texas Tech defeated Baylor 2-0 in Lubbock, TX.
Texas Tech was the only top 4 team that won on Wednesday night. The 4th and 5th place teams going into Wednesday, OSU and WV tied in a defensive match. OU defeated the 2nd place TCU squad and the first place Texas Longhorns were tied by the last place Cyclones 1-1. A bit of a 'scary night' for Texas and TCU.

The standing going into the last three nights of Big 12 Soccer schedule is as follows;

T-1st - Texas - 5-0-2 - 17 points (11-1-4 overall) - 2 matches left.
T-1st - Texas Tech - 5-1-2 - 17 points (9-3-5 overall) - 1 match left
3rd - TCU - 4-1-2 - 14 points (9-3-4 overall) - 2 matches left
4th - Oklahoma State - 3-1-3 - 12 points (10-2-4 overall) - 2 matches left
T-5th - Oklahoma - 3-3-1 - 10 points (8-5-3 overall) - 2 matches left
T-5th - West Virginia - 2-1-4 - 10 points (5-4-7 overall) - 2 matches left
7th - Kansas State - 2-4-2 - 8 points (6-8-3 overall) - 2 matches left
8th - Baylor - 2-5 - 6 points (4-9-2 overall) - 2 matches left
9th - Kansas - 1-5-2 - 5 points (8-8-2 overall) - 2 matches left
10th - Iowa State - 0-6-2 - 2 points (3-9-4 overall) - 1 match left

Friday's Match:

Texas at Oklahoma State - 2nd road match in a row for Texas. A win or a tie is more critical for OSU than it is for Texas. Texas could secure at least a top 2 finish with a win. both are probably in the top 5 teams in the end.

TCU at Baylor - Baylor needs every point they can get to get into the Big 12 tourney. A win would ensure a tourney bid. A tie helps them. TCU will be upset about losing to OU. they need a win to keep themselves in the top 2 teams running in the end.

West Virginia at Oklahoma - The two teams are tied for 5th. The team that finished in 6th will likely have to play one of Texas, TCU or Texas Tech. That is why finishing 5th is critical. WV has the easier game next Wednesday with K-State. OU plays Texas. OU needs a win for sure and a tie at worse.
Wednesday's Matches:

Oklahoma at Texas - Texas will be playing for a potential first place finish. OU will be playing to make it into the top 4/5 teams in the end. It will be a tough match on the road for OU.
TCU at Texas Tech - The two teams could be playing for potential 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishes.
Oklahoma State at Baylor - OSU will be playing to stay in the Top 4 teams, maybe top 3 teams. Baylor could be playing for a Big 12 tourney berth.
West Virginia at Kansas State - Both the teams will be playing for a 6th place finish.
Iowa State at Kansas - A win by Kansas might let them sneak into the Big 12 tourney.

The Oklahoma Sooners Women's Soccer Team let an opportunity slip right out of their hands today. The Sooners played West Virginia at John Crain Field at 1 PM. The two teams were tied with 10 points in the Big 12 Standings which placed them in tie for 5th place. A win for either team would solidify their place in the Big 12 Tourney and guarantee themselves a Top 5 finish and avoid playing the top 3 teams in the Big 12 Tourney.

The Sooners scored twice in the 1st half as England scored after an assist from Hawkins in the 13th minute of the match. Wagner then scored from Kroflin to make the score 2-0 Oklahoma in the 34th minute. At half the 2-0 lead was just what any doctor would have ordered for the Sooners against West Virginia.

The second half was not the ending to the match that the Sooners wanted. West Virginia scored 3 goals in the final half to win the important match 3-2. One of the Mountaineers goals was off a corner kick where the Sooners had trouble clearing the ball. The other to goals were on plays where the Mountaineers transitioned themselves into an advantage in the Sooners defensive zone to take advantage of open players and open shots to score.

Oklahoma will still be going to the Big 12 Tourney the last week of the month but they are now in danger of falling to 7th place in the standings next week as they play Texas in Austin. To stay in 6th place the Sooners must pick up 1 point against Texas, so a tie is needed at least to raise their point total to 11 in the Big 12. To do so, that may be a large task as Texas is 6-0-2 in the Big 12. Meanwhile the team that is chasing Oklahoma, Kansas State plays West Virginia in Morgantown, WV. With a win, Kansas State can increase their point total to 11 points in the Big 12. Since they defeated Oklahoma earlier this year, they own the tie-breaker, I believe, even if OU ties Texas next Wednesday.

The light in the dark clouds is that if WV defeats or ties Kansas State at home, OU will still finish in 6th no matter the outcome of the OU - Texas match. But that will mean that they will likely face either TCU or Texas Tech in the first round of the Big 12 Tourney. Both of those matchups will be tough matchups for OU.

Here is the staff writers article about the Sooner Women's Soccer match on Sunday.

https://soonersports.com/news/2022/10/2 ... ome-finale

The good news out of the not-so-good good news (Sunday's match) is that the Sooner Soccer team will be in the Big 12 Tournament this season. Here is the Big 12 Standings after all the play on Sunday. All matches remaining will be played on Wednesday, Oct 26th.

1st - Texas* - 6-0-2 - 20 points (12-1-4 overall) - 1 match left hosting Oklahoma
T-2nd - Texas* Tech - 5-1-2 - 17 points (9-3-5 overall) - 1 match left @ TCU
T-2nd - TCU - 5-1-2 - 17 points (10-3-4 overall) - 1 match left hosting Texas Tech
4th - West Virginia - 3-1-4 - 13 points (6-4-7 overall) - 1 match left hosting Kansas State
5th - Oklahoma State - 3-2-3 - 12 points (10-3-4 overall) - 1 match left @ Baylor
6th - Oklahoma - 3-4-1 - 10 points (8-6-3 overall) - 1 match left @ Texas
7th - Kansas State - 2-4-2 - 8 points (6-8-3 overall) - 1 match left @ West Virginia
8th - Baylor - 2-6 - 6 points (4-10-2 overall) - 1 match left hosting Oklahoma State
9th - Kansas - 1-5-2 - 5 points (8-8-2 overall) - 1 match left hosting Iowa State
10th - Iowa State - 0-6-2 - 2 points (3-9-4 overall) - 1 match left @ Kansas

What is known about the Big 12 playoff seedings is this. Texas will be the #1 seed and no worse than the #2 seed. With at least a tie against OU they will cinch the 1st place seed. They own the tie-breaker over Tech but Texas and TCU tied in their meeting earlier. I do not know how the tie-breaker would work in that case. Texas should be favored over OU in their remaining game. The TCU-Tech match will probably decide the #2 and #3 seeds.

West Virginia, Oklahoma State and Kansas State will determine their own fates in their matches. With wins, all three teams will move up or remain in the 4th spot (WV). The WV and K-State matchup is the key probably. the winner of the match really helps themselves. If OSU can win at Baylor, they force WV to defeat K-State to remain in 4th.

Oklahoma will need be watching the WV and K-State match and probably pulling for WV strongly. If K-State wins that match, OU will have a difficult time remaining in 6th. Even with a tie against Texas, the Sooners will drop to 7th. With a win over Texas and a loss by OSU to Baylor and a loss by WV to K-State, OU could finish in a T-4th with WV, which would place OU in 5th. That is by far OU's best scenario. But that is a lot of ifs.

Baylor and Kansas probably determine their fate to make it into the Big 12 Tourney. A win puts either team in the tourney if the other losses.

Good luck to the Sooners on Wednesday night in Austin against Texas. If OU can pick up 1 point with a tie or 3 points with a win, it would be a great thing for the Sooners.
