Oklahoma Sooners Women's BB team host SMU @ 10:30 AM on Friday

Post by OUBeliever56A »

After an opening game win over Oral Roberts where the Sooners scored 104 points, they have a chance to day vs SMU today to show the Sooners can play a little defense against a challenging SMU team. The game is part of Field Trip Day for the school kids to attend a Sooner Women's Basketball game for free.

Here is the staff writers article about today's matchup with SMU vs the 15th ranked Sooner Women's Basketball team.

Sooners Take Care of Business on Friday Morning! Win over SMU 97-74!

I will admit that I stayed home this morning and watched the game between OU and SMU on ESPN+ due to the 'noisy atmosphere' of the Field Trip Day in LNC.

I thought the announcers for the game did a nice job of describing the action as I enjoyed their comments that were spot on IMO.

I also thought the Sooners played very well today and most importantly, they played much better on defense the entire four quarters. Here were the quarter splits for the game.

1Q - OU 22 - SMU 15
2Q - OU 27 - SMU 22
3Q - OU 23 - SMU 22
4Q - OU 25 - SMU 17
Totals - OU 97 - SMU 74

It is a given that if the Sooners score 90+ points that the other team will benefit from the faster pace the Sooners play and that they will be able to score more than usual. It is a part of the fast pace the Sooners play. But even in giving up 74 points, I thought the Sooners played better defense today except for maybe a few trips where they gave up offensive rebounds and too many reaching fouls on defense.

On offense the Sooners shot the ball very well today. The Sooners shot 52.3% from the field overall and 60.9% from 3-point range (14 for 23). They also added 15 of 18 shooting from the charity stripe for 83.3%. When the Sooners are shooting this well, they are very tough to beat. the numbers continued to be good for assists with 23 and the turnovers were limited to 10. The 30 boards the Sooners had were a little short of what they needed.

On defense, the Sooners limited SMU to 34.9% shooting from the field overall and 25.0% from 3-point range. The Sooners forced 18 turnovers and limited assists to 12 but they also gave up 43 rebounds to SMU with 14 offensive rebounds.

Williams played like the All-American she is today with 25 points on great shooting with 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Three support players, Tot, Vann and Joens added double digit points with 12, 12, and 13 points respectively. Llanusa and Robertson added 4 and 9 points but did not get many shots today. Vann led the Sooners with 7 rebounds. Tot led with assists at 7. No Sooner had more than 2 turnovers. Freshman Reyna Scott, Kierston Johnson and Beatrice Culliton had 8, 4 and 4 points as they continue to contribute early in their careers. Tucker played strong defense in her 16 minutes on the floor but did not score.

The Sooners did get in a bit of foul trouble, especially inside today. Liz Scott fouled out with 6 points, while Culliton had 4 fouls and Vann had 3 foul. The Sooners 23 fouls gave SMU 28 free throws in the game as they made 24 of them. Those 24 points kept SMU in the game especially in the second half.

The game was progress for the Sooners and they continue to show their superior depth and team shooting potential. The Sooners are now 2-0 and have averaged 101.0 points in their 2 games. They have also allowed 84 points a game. That number needs to be reduced to the low 70s at least, IMO. The Sooners have shot 49.7% from the field in the two games. The one thing that needs to improve is rebounding as they have been out-rebounded by 13 boards in the two games.

The next games for the Sooners are in Utah next Tuesday and Wednesday against BYU and Utah. BYU game is on Tuesday at 4 PM with the Utah game at 8 PM on Wednesday. Both times are CST. Currently BYU is 0-1 with Utah at 1-0. BYU plays once more before next week and Utah plays twice before then. Altitude is a thing when you play in Utah. The Sooners will be tested as they play twice in two days.
