Sooner Women's BB - 4th of Four Road Games tonight - Ark State

Post by OUBeliever56A »

The Oklahoma sooners Women's Basketball Team travels to Jonesboro, AR today to play Arkansas State in the final road game of the 4 games the 8 days while traveling to Utah and Texas. That is a rough stretch of games for any team. the Sooners are 4-1 on the season which includes a loss to Utah last Wednesday on the second game of back-to-back games in Utah.

In their last outing the Sooners won 89-80 over UT-Arlington in a 'get-right' game after the loss to Utah. The Sooners did a good job of 'getting right' in the game with the exception of 29 turnovers. The Sooners need to correct that issue tonight in the 7:30 PM tipoff. The game can be watched on ESPN+.

The Sooner offense is coming around as Williams, Robertson and Vann had strong games against UT-Arlington. Tot has also played well this season. If the Sooners can get Ana Llanusa going they should be close to ready for the season. Llanusa is playing strong defense though but there are just not a great deal of shots out there to take. L Scott is leading the way at post, with Johnson and Culliton adding some relief, but so far Vann is filling in for L. Scott in important minutes. Tucker is filling a needed defensive role for the Sooners in a relief role also. But if she could score some, it would be helpful. R. Scott and Joens are also playing relief minutes outside and doing a good job for the Sooners.

As the pre-game article notes, the last 3 games against Arkansas State have been won by an average of 33 points. In the first home game in 2021 for the Sooners, Coach Baranczyk's debut at home, the Sooners won 101-89. Six Sooners scored in double figures in that game led by Williams, Robertson and Llanusa with 18, 17, 16 and Svoboda, Tot and Vann with 14, 10 and 10. This was the first glimpse of the Sooners 'Jennie-Ball' style of play. ( A play on words from 'Billy-Ball". ) BTW- Where did Svobada go for the Sooners. At one time last year early, she looked like she could help the Sooners. She has had a couple chances to play early this year but is #4/#5 on the depth chart inside for the Sooners. I wonder if she will get more a chance as the season moves on.

Arkansas State has lost their leading scorer from that game in Wallace who scored 25. Pendleton who scored 15 looks to be injured the last two games also. I don't think the Red Wolves can keep up with the Sooners this season if the Sooners take care of the ball (minimize turnovers) and play solid defense as they did against UT-A last game.

Here is the pre-game staff writers article about the Arkansas State game tonight.

Good luck to the Sooners tonight.

Turnovers is hangover from Sherrie lack discipline.
If she doesn’t get them to play defense it’s going to be long season.

The Oklahoma Sooners defeated the Arkansas State Red Wolves tonight by the score of 95-70. The scores by quarter were; 1Q - OU 23 to AS 17, 2Q - OU 39 to AS 32. 3Q - OU 61 to AS 51 and 4Q - OU 95 to AS 75. OU exploded with 34 points in the 4th quarter to run away with the win.

The Sooners moved to 5-1 on the season with the win. Oklahoma did reduce the turnovers tonight as they had 16 tonight versus the 29 in their last game. The Sooners shot 52.1% from the field on 37 of 71 shots. They were cold from 3-point range though as they shot 26.7 on 8 of 30 shots. From the charity stripe they were 13 of 19 for 68.4%. The Sooners id outrebound the Red Wolves 43 to 39. The Sooners scored 52 points in the paint tonight with 17 fast break points and 26 assists in the game.

As 'a fellow poster mentioned, Oklahoma did shoot many three's with little success, especially early in the game. It was not pretty to watch but eventually the Sooners ran Arkansas State off the court. I learned last year, that Oklahoma's style of play is not about any one, or any five possessions. A fan has to watch the entirety of the game. The Sooners did play pretty good defense most of the game.

One thing of note, with the score OU 35 and Arkansas State 32, Coach Baranczyk was hit with a technical foul after a play in the paint on the Sooners end of the court. Oklahoma outscored the Red Wolves by the score of 50 - 28 the rest of the way. The Red Wolves missed both technical foul shots and them missed a layup on their possession. OU quickly scored 4 points to end the 2Q to take a 7 point lead.

I thought Culliton showed a bit of progress tonight on defense and offense. The freshman scored 11 points with 6 rebounds. I also thought that Liz Scott played an active game with 7 points and 7 rebounds despite fouling out in the 4th quarter. The trio of Williams, Robertson and Llanusa added 14 points with 3 rebounds, 9 points with 5 rebounds and 14 points with 5 rebounds and 4 assists respectively. Tot added 7 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds. Off the bench, Reyna Scott scored 8 with 3 rebounds. Johnson scored 8 points with 2 rebounds. Vann scored 8 points with 6 rebounds. Tucker and Joens finished the scoring for the Sooners with 5 and 4 respectively.

The Sooners did not play their best, especially from outside the paint, but they played with tempo, rebounded and played solid defense.

The Sooners will be back on the court after Thanksgiving on November 30th against Northwestern State (LA) at Lloyd Noble Center at 6 PM.
