OU Sooner Women's BB travels to Kansas looking for a 16th win !

The Oklahoma Sooners will look to cement their Big 12 Championship of the Regular Season today in a 4 PM game in Lawrence, KA against the Jayhawks. With a win, the Sooners will move to 16 - 2 in conference play which will tie the Sooners record for most conference wins in a season (2006 Team was 16-0).

Is the win required, no, the Sooners have clinched the regular season championship and lead Texas by two games. But the future seeding of the NCAA Tourney does lie ahead, so a win at Kansas could mean quite a bit. I hope the Sooners just go north, play loose and play well and handle their business today. Kansas is playing well right now as they are 7-1 in their last eight games as they have only lost at Baylor in that stretch of games. They are 10-7 in conference play.

One thing to watch today is the Big 12 games of Oklahoma State, TCU and BYU. The Sooners will play the winner of the #8 and #9 teams in the conference in their opening game of the Big 12 Tourney. The day starts with OSU in 8th and TCU and BYU in a tie for 9th. Here are their games today.

11 AM on Sunday - OSU plays at Baylor today. Baylor is favored and needs a win to try and secure a 4th place finish in the Big 12.
Noon Saturday - TCU is at West Virginia. But TCU is benefitting from the return of the 6'6" center Sedona Prince. She can be a handful. But West Virginia is probably favored at home.
7 PM on Saturday - BYU plays at Texas. I would think that Texas will play inspired today after being beaten by OU on Wednesday.

If all three lose, the #8 seed is OSU and the #9 seed is TCU. It would be nice to have OSU and TCU lose with a BYU win. If that happens BYU moves into #9 spot with OSU retaining the #8 spot. I think it would be a plus if OU can avoid TCU and Prince in the Big 12 Tourney.

Good luck to the Sooners and have fun today.

The Oklahoma Woman's Basketball Team was not successful yesterday in Lawrence as they dropped their final Big 12 regular season game to Kansas 83-74. The Sooners led at half time 39 to 37 with a very strong 2Q where they outscored Kansas 29 to 18. But the 3Q proved to be the difference as Kansas won the quarter 22-14 to lead 59-53 by the end of the quarter. OU was unable to mount a full comeback in the final quarter as Kansas won by 9 points.

Looking at the stats and by watching the game, the difference for Kansas was probably the turnover by Oklahoma. After doing a very good job in conference play in reducing the turnovers the Sooners committed 19 on Saturday. The big plus for Kansas was the play of their two guards, Nichols and Kersgieter. They scored 29 and 26 points respectively. Kersgieter made 11 buckets with 3 three's while Nichols was fouled often as she made 13 of 16 free throws along with 7 buckets on the game. Oklahoma did not really have an answer for either of them.

Here is the Sooner staff writers article about the game.

Other than the turnovers, the Sooners did most things well except their shooting from 3-point territory where they were 5 of 22 for 22.7%. A couple other things that hurt the Sooners was that Williams never was able to make her presence felt in the game as she played only 13 minutes and that Culliton quickly got into foul trouble and played just 8 minutes.

Is this a setback for the Sooners? I do not think so and I hope that is true. With the other results in the Big 12 yesterday, Oklahoma will take their first place finish at 15-3 and play in the Big 12 Tourney on Saturday at 1:30 PM against the #8 and #9 seeds. Those seeds will be Oklahoma State and TCU (will win the tiebreaker against BYU with two wins head-to-head. As we know, in Bedlam, anything can happen if OSU wins that game over TCU. If TCU wins, Oklahoma will have to overcome the big 6'6" center for TCU who is back and playing well.

After Big 12 play is concluded today with OSU playing at Baylor, I will have more about the Big 12 Tourney before it starts on March 7th (Thursday).

Great Regular Season for the Oklahoma Sooners in winning the Big 12 conference outright with their two wins over Texas in head-to-head games this season.
