Sooner Men's Golf Heads West for Pauma Valley Inv: 18th & 19th

Post by OUBeliever56A »

The Oklahoma Men's Golf Team traveled to San Diego over the weekend to play in the Pauma Valley Invitational. The Sooners, fresh off a monumental win at the Southern Highlands Collegiate, will seek their third win of the season at the two-day, 54-hole event that tees off Monday morning (today). Sorry for the late post, I have been trying to catch up after returning from Lubbock for OU Softball over the weekend.

Jase Summy, who finished second at SoHi, anchors the Oklahoma lineup this week in San Diego. Since last fall, the sophomore has posted nine straight rounds of par-or-better golf in tournaments. Drew Goodman, who has also posted nine consecutive par-or-better rounds, will tee off Monday for the Sooners. PGA Tour U standout Ben Lorenz, redshirt senior Luke Kluver and true freshman Ryder Cowan complete the Oklahoma lineup. Stephen Campbell Jr. returns to action as an individual.

Here is the Sooner staff writers article about the invitational.

The first 18 holes has been completed out at the Pauma Valley Inv. The Sooners shot Even Par (284) for the first round which places them 5 shots behind the leader, Vanderbilt, and in a tie for 7th Place. For the Sooners, Ben Lorenz shot a 1-under 70, Jace Summy and Like Kluver shot EVEN Par 71's. Ryder Cowan shot a 1-over 72 with Drew Godman shooting a 2-over 73.

Stephen Campbell JR, playing as an individual, shot a 2-over 73.

Good luck to the Sooners on the afternoon round.

The first day was a a day of two rounds by the Oklahoma Sooners. Above, I had looked at the 1st round results played Monday morning and posted that the Sooners shot an even par round of 284. Either I read, the scoreboard wrong or things were not fully updated yet. But, the Sooners actually shot 3-over par, 287. The Sooners shot these scores in Round 1:

Luke Kluver 71 -> Even
Ryder Cowan 71 -> Even = 142 Team Total
Ben Lorenz 72 -> 1-over = 214 Team Total
Jace Summy 73 -> 2-over = 287 Team Total
Drew Goodman 74 -> 3-over

After the first round the Sooners were 13 shots behind the leader Vanderbilt who shot a 274 - 10-under par.

Things improved substantially for the Sooners in Round 2 in the afternoon. The Sooners shot a 9-under 275 in the afternoon round to move to a 36-hole total of 562 or 6-under par. It looks like Oklahoma shot the low round of the afternoon with their 9-under score, but one group (3 teams) is still on the course and will finish thier rounds this morning.

At 6-under, the Sooners are tied for 3rd place with San Diego and UCLA. Vanderbilt is still in 1st place at 15-under par as they shot 274 and 279 (553). Oklahoma State is in 2nd with a 556 at 12-under par after rounds of 279 and 277.

In the afternoon round, the Sooners shot these scores:

Ben Lorenz 67 -> 4-under
Ryder Cowan 68 -> 3-under = Team Score of 135
Luke Kluver 70 -> 1-under = Team Score of 205
Drew Goodman 70 -> 1-under = Team Score of 275
Jase Summy 73 -> 3-over

In the individual tournament, Ben Lorenz and Ryder Cowan are tied for 6th place with their 3-under total of 139. They are 5 shots behind the leaders at 8-under par at 134. Luke Kluver is 1-under with a 141 total score in a tie for 18th place. Drew Goodman is 2-over par at 144 in a tie for 38th place. Jase Summy is at 4-over, 146 and in a tie for 51st place.

Stephen Campbell Jr is playing as an individual in the tourney and has shot 74 - 69 for a 23-hole total of 143, 1-over par in is in a tie for 30th.

Here is the Sooner staff writers article about the 36-hole action on Day 1.

Good luck to the Sooners today in the final 18 holes.

In their next tournament, the Sooners start their cross-country trek as they tee off next Monday (March 25) at the Valspar Collegiate Championship at the Floridian National GC in Palm City, Fla. The field features 10 top-25 teams, including six of the nation's top 10.

Congratulations to the Men's Team on their 4th place finish and to Ryder Cowan and Stephen Campbell Jr on their Top 10 finishes individually.
