Oklahoma Baseball host Lamar for 3-game series Th-Fr-Sat @ LDM !

Post by OUBeliever56A »

The 19-5 Oklahoma Sooners will host the 19-5 Lamar Cardinals this weekend at L Dale Mitchell Park on Thursday at 6:30 PM on Thursday, 6:30 on Friday and 2 PM on Saturday. The games can be seen via SoonerVision on ESPN+ and heard locally in Oklahoma on SportsTalk 1400 AM/99.3 FM or nationwide on The Varsity app. Live stats can be found at OUStats.com. Toby Rowland and Rich Hills will be on the radio call, while Chad McKee and Blake Brewster will call the action on ESPN+.

The out of confernece series is required because of an odd number of Big 12 baseball teams (no Iowa State). To pick up a seires vs Lamar is a good thing as they are a good team and will keep Oklahoma playing well to be successful. Here is a quick rundown on Lamar.

Team Batting Line: .275 BA, .382 OB% and .405 Slug% - 44 doubles, 3 triples, 18 HRs - 17 of 18 stolen bases - 6.04 Runs/Game.
Team Pitching and Defense Line: Team ERA is 3.43, BAA .208, OB% Against .297, Slug% Against .301 - 26 doubles, 0 triples, 15 HRs Allowed - 19 errors, .978 Field%
Lamar seems to live on the pitching. They have four starters with ERAs under 4.00 - Caple (1.18 ERA - 3-2), Morse (3.14 ERA - 2-0), Hesseltine (3.45 ERA - 3-0) and Elilis (3.94 - 4-0). They also have 4 strong relievers; Perez (0.00 ERA - 14.1 IP - 1-0 w 4 saves), Kreuzer (0.00 ERA - 4.2 IP - 0-0 w 0 saves), Moseley (0.79 ERA - 11.1 IP - 2-0 w 0 saves) and Neal (245 ERA - 14.2 IP - 1-0 w 3 saves). Oklahoma will have to find a way to build some offense against what looks like a good pitching staff.

But the one caveat is this. Against what would be SEC and Big 12 teams, Lamar is 0-3 this season.

Oklahoma's pitching has a 4.94 ERA this season. They also have a .249 BAA.

The Sooner starting pitchers will be key in this series. They need to keep up with the Lamar hurlers. The three Sooners with the most starts are Braden Davis w 6 starts and a .390 ERA, Brendah Girton has 6 starts with a 5.03 ERA and James Hitt with 5 starts and a 783 ERA. Kyson Witherspoon has one start with a 6 relief appearences with a 1.33 ERA. K Witherspoon also tossed 7.2 innings in relief giving up only 1 run last Sunday against WV. I wonder if KW might get a start this week.

Oklahoma's Batting Line is this: .310 BA, .410 OB%, .458 Slug% - 45 doubles, 8 triple, 19 HRs - 40 steals in 51 attempts. Oklahoma's offense better than Lamar's offense. But they need to hit what looks like a good pitching staff for Lamar.

I think the key will be the Sooners starters and if they are able to keep the Lamar offense in check and allow 3 or less runs early in the game through 5 or 6 innings.

Good luck to the Sooners this 'weekend'.

As you may have seen posted, the Oklahoma Baseball Team dropped their first game to Lamar 12-10. It was a double-tough loss in that the Sooners held a 10-7 lead after 6 innings. OU had battled back to take the lead after trailing 6-1 through the top of the 3rd inning.

The inning-by-inning runs were:

Lamar -------- 0 0 6 1 0 0 5 0 0 = 12
Oklahoma -- 0 1 3 5 0 1 0 0 0 = 10
Giving up those two big innings was the downfall for the Sooners. The first one, in the 3rd, put the Sooners behind. In the 7th, it won the game. Oklahoma was unable to score more than 1 run after the 3rd inning.

Four errors also hurt the Sooners as only 5 of the Lamar runs were earned as the Sooners gave up 7 unearned runs. Ouch! the defense did not help the pitchers at all last night.

On offense the Sooners did hit 3 HRs and had 2 SB against one CS.

The second game between Oklahoma and Lamar was another offense affair on Friday as Lamar won again 13-8 over Oklahoma. With the wind blowing out the two teams hit 7 HRs and 2 doubles between them.

The inning-by-inning runs were:

Lamar -------- 2 1 2 3 5 0 0 0 0 = 13 10 hits 1 E
Oklahoma -- 4 0 1 0 0 1 0 0 2 = 8 10 hits 1 E

Lamar got out to quick lead by the 3rd inning and built the lead to 13 to 5 at the end of 5ive innings. Oklahoma's only lead was after the 1st and 2nd innings when they lead 4-2 and 4-3.

OU's pitching continued to have a rough weekend as the first two Sooner pitchers sent out to the mound allowed 9 hits and 7 walks in 4.2 innings. Jeff Loades did pitch 4.1 shutout innings for the Sooners to end the game.

Three Sooners had 2 RBIs (Walk, Nicklaus and Pettis) and four Sooners hit HRs ((Walk, Nicklaus, Madron and Pettis).

The teams meet for the series finale Saturday at 2 p.m. CT. The game can be seen via SoonerVision on ESPN+ and heard locally in Oklahoma on SportsTalk 1400 AM/99.3 FM or nationwide on The Varsity app. Live stats can be found at OUStats.com.

Pregame Saturday will be a Kids Club Easter egg hunt beginning at noon featuring golden eggs, a prize wheel, snow cones and more.

Good luck to the Sooners today.
