The Oklahoma Sooners #12 Women's Tennis Team was successful in their first SEC Match on Saturday as they defeated Arkansas 4-3 in Fayetteville. The Women's Tennis Team became OU's second program to win its SEC conference opener after officially joining the league on July 1, 2024. OU Wpmen's Gymnastics was the first program to win their SC Opener earlier this spring.
The Sooners dropped the Doubles Point to Arkansas as the Razorbacks won the matches on Court #1 and Court #2 with the Sooners "new" team of Julie Garcia Ruiz and Ava Catanzarite winning on Court 3, 6-2. the Sooners shuffled thir doubles team on Court 1 and 3 for the first SEC Match. Chloe Noel played with Alina Shcherbininia on Court #1 in another "new" team. Salakthip Ounmuang and Gloria Nahum continued playing as a duo on Court 2. Cara Mester had been playing all Spring in doubles for the Sooners but was replaced with Ava Catanzarite playing. I wonder if Mester was not available for the match.
With Arkansas winning the Double Point, OU needed to win 4 of the 6 Singles matches to win the Match against Arkansas. Emma Straker continued her strong play this spring playing on Court 4 and won her match 6-1, 6-0. Alina Shcherbininia added a second point for the Sooners on Court #2 as she won 6-1, 6-3. Arkansas won the next match on Court #1 to tie the match at 2-2. Gloria Nahum, on Court #6, posted the 3rd Sooner point as she won 6-3, 6-0. Salakthip Ounmuang nailed down the 4th Sooner point and the win with her 6-1, 6-3 win. With the play continuing on Court #5, Arkansas won the match to produce the final score of 4-3 in favor of the Oklahoma Sooners.
