I'm not sure what I'm more frustrated with to be honest. If you didn't know anything about either of these teams you would think we both had amazing hitting and absolutely suck pitching/defense.

I'm ready for it to be over and really hoping we don't carry any of this (except the hitting) over to the Tenn series.

Tom if I'm not mistaken Wichita had 5 home runs and we had 3. However it seemed like the Shockers might have had six. Way too many HRs from our pitching staff. I imagine that Patty would liked to have saved Sam for the first game against Tenn. But out of necessity she kind of had to pitch Sam. So I guess the question is - will Sam start against TN this Friday night?

Patty did take some of the blame on the post game. She said they were working on Tennessee most of this week - so they pretty much overlooked WSU. Not sure how that bodes for Tenn now - but she did say the pitchers still sucked, but took some of the blame.

Really hoping we can a reliable #2 pitcher (Lowry) up to speed. The others have proven to be little more than filler. Maybe Smith could be #3 and keep the others for total cleanup when the game is NOT on the line.

No. 2 Softball Slugs Past Wichita State 19-16 -- (as Wichita State hit 5 HRs with 14 hits of their own)

When the top of the 1st inning was over, I mentioned to my wife that I guess it was good that we did not go to Wichita this year to watch the game. The Sooners scored 8 runs in the top of the 1st inning and looked to make a quick game of it. Four-to-five hours of driving for a 5-inning game is fun, but a real trip to endure. Then it was 8-2 as Wichita State hit two solo HRs in the bottom of the first. OU regained the 'run-rule" lead with two more runs in the top of the 2nd. Another run by Wichita State in the bottom of the 2nd on a double and a single made it 10-3. OU scored 4 runs in the top of the 3rd to make it 14-3. Then the bottom fell out.

In the bottom of the 3rd, the Shockers did just that. They scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 3rd. That included a 3-run HR and a 2-riun HR by Wichita State. The score was suddenly 14-9 and not the quick five inning game it looked like it might be. Three more runs in the bottom of the 4th for Wichita State made it 14-12 as Sam Landry had to enter the ball game in the 4th to provide some "sanity" to the game that really did not materialize.

OU picked up their bats and used them in the top of the 5th as they scored 5 more runs to make it 19-12. In the bottom of the 5th and 6th, Wichita State scored 4 more runs off of the 3-time SEC Pitcher of the Week to make the score 19-16. It was truly a game between the two teams. The OU pitchers (Deal, Monticelli and Landry) never produced a 1, 2, 3 inning last night. They allowed 14 hits with 6 walks, 1 double, 5 HRs, with 3 errors and a Catcher's Interference on defense to allow the 16 runs. Wichita State scored in 6 of the 7 innings. The Sooners allowed a total of 37 bases to Wichita State last night.

Thankfully, the Sooner bats were alive last night. Oklahoma also belted out 17 hits with 1 double, 2 triples and 3 HRs with 7 walks. Oklahoma had 38 total bases last night.

Three hitters, NellyMac, Garcia and Bland all had 3 hits. Pickering reached base 5 times and Dayton, Agbayani and Emerling also reached base 3 times. Garcia had 4 RBI, with Dayton, NellyMac, Pickering, Parker, Emerling and Bland all had 2 RBI. Bland also stole a base.

The reuslts of last night pushed the OU Team ERA upward from 1.90 to 2.33. The errors lowered the fielding % from ,980 to ,977 with 19 errors.

The offensive numbers improved, from .332 to .338 for BA, .469 to .471 for OB% and from .650 to .657 for Slug% and from 8.33 R/G to 8.68.

Last night was ugly for OU Softball. I remember three games to reference after this. The 16-9 loss to #2 Michigan when the quartet of Romero, Clifton Knighten and Aviu were freshman in 2016 is one such game. The 2019 loss to UCLA in the WCWS finals 16-3 is another. The final one was a win versus Wichita State inthe 2021 Regional when OU won 24-7. But the score was 14-7 after 6 innings before OU scored 10 runs. That Shocker team was a much better team than the Shocker team last night and earlier in the year. But I will say that Wichita State has scored 54 runs in their last 5 games for 10+ runs a game against UTSA (3x), Central Arkansas and OU.

Here is the post-game article about the win for the Sooners.

The Sooners will try to move on from this win and get ready for a big 3-game series against Tennessee starting on Friday night.

A win is a win.......but some wins are hard to watch.

I like your "in context" perspective, Believer.

Games like this are a challenge to interpret: The offense went Super Nova while the pitching fizzled like a damp sparkler. Sooners win while feeling like it was a loss. I get that as a fan.

I'd also enjoy hearing from the WSU coach about what was going on with the Shockers before and during that game. Did her team have an attitude of go-for-broke that gave them more freedom to just play hard and not worry about outcomes? Did they discover some secret weakness they exploited with intense preparation and cunning execution? Or was it just one of those games that happens now and then to the best and the worst of teams?

The pitching staff has some work to do in any case. I hope they are keeping their focus on Tennessee and moving on from yesterday. It's not only the best thing they can do to improve it is the only thing they can do.

After a 1-run scoring day against MU with pitching good enough to win, it takes 19 runs to win with the pitching be horrid.

Hopefully, like the hitting getting the 1-run game out of their system, the pitching will rebound from 16.

Sooners HAVE to defend homefield - take out Tenn!
texsa sucks!
